  • Publication number: 20150044037
Abstract: A system and method is provided in which a turbocharger includes a heat shield wall that is formed together with the bearing housing as a unitary structure. The wall can extend from a main body portion of the bearing housing in a generally radially outward direction. The wall can be spaced from the main body and attached by a plurality of ribs such that chambers are defined therebetween. A circumferential passage can extend through the bearing housing to permit fluid communication between the chambers and outside of the bearing housing. In this way, a fluid outlet from the chambers is provided. As a result of such an arrangement, the need for a separate heat shield is eliminated, which can facilitate the assembly process and special attachment methods associated with a separate heat shield.

  • Publication number: 20140373532
Abstract: An electrically assisted turbocharger (1) comprising a housing (3) and an electric motor stator (22) disposed in the housing (3). The stator (22) includes a pair of o-rings, or other circumferential seals (204, 208), disposed therearound. The o-rings (204, 208) are operative to seal against an interior of the housing (3) to form an annular chamber (130) around at least a portion of the stator (22) and a pair of end cavities (122, 126) at the axial ends of the stator (22). The annular chamber (130) is adapted to allow the circulation of a cooling fluid around the stator (22). A pair of bearings (10, 12) may be disposed in the housing (3), one on each side of the stator (22). A shaft (7) is supported in the housing (3) by the bearings (10, 12). The shaft (7) in tum supports a turbine wheel (5) and a compressor wheel. An electric motor rotor (24) is disposed on the shaft (7) between the bearings (10, 12) and inside the stator (22).

  • Publication number: 20130202432
Abstract: To solve both axial and rotational constraint problems in turbochargers with rolling element bearings (REBs), a REB sleeve or outer race is mounted to the bearing housing in a way that is not axially and radially rigid, thus allowing for oil damping films both radially and axially. At the same time, the REB sleeve or outer race is held so that the REB sleeve or outer race does not rotate relative to the bearing housing. This dual purpose is achieved using an anti-rotation ring and a damping ring. The anti-rotation ring includes at least one anti-rotation feature for engaging the bearing housing and at least one anti-rotation feature for engaging the REB cartridge, preventing rotation of the REB cartridge sleeve or outer race. The damping ring axially locates the REB cartridge and dampens axial movement and cushions axial thrust.

  • Patent number: 8328535
Abstract: A restraint system (300, 300?, 500) for a vaned diffuser (225) of a turbocharger (100) or other fluid boosting device is provided that can reduce or eliminate losses. The system (300, 300?, 500) uses a structure to provide both a pressure load on the vaned diffuser (225) and a seal for the vaned diffuser (225). The structure can be a fluoroelastomer O-ring (350, 350?, 550). The O-ring (350, 350?, 550) can be positioned at least partially in a channel (325, 325?, 525) formed in at least one of the diffuser ring (206, 206?), the compressor housing (103) and the center housing (102).
