Abstract: An earphone storage mechanism integrated in an information handling system stores earphones with an audio output selector that detects the presence or absence of the earphones in order to select earphones or internal speakers of the information handling system to output audible audio information. For instance, upon detecting removal of earphones from an earphone storage opening, the audio output selector switches audible output from internal speakers of a portable information handling system to the earphones. In one embodiment, a cord reel extends and retracts an earphone cord to interface with removably coupled earphones. In another embodiment, a wireless transmitter communicates audio signals to a wireless receiver interfaced with the earphones.
