Patent number: 10113530Abstract: In one aspect, a method for installing a blade sock onto a rotor blade of a wind turbine may generally include positioning the blade sock adjacent to a blade tip of the rotor blade, wherein the blade sock comprises a sock strap forming a closed-shape. In addition, the method may include moving the blade sock relative to the rotor blade such that the blade tip is received within the closed-shape formed by the sock strap and moving the blade sock spanwise along the rotor blade towards a blade root of the rotor blade until the blade sock is positioned at an intermediate location defined between the blade root and the blade tip, wherein the sock strap is configured to fit tightly around an outer perimeter of the rotor blade at the intermediate location.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2014Date of Patent: October 30, 2018Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Ulrich Werner Neumann, Brent Hamilton Holloway, Stephanie Willman, Michael Cade Foster

Patent number: 9893668Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to an a method, apparatus and computer program product for controlling the operation of a drive unit comprising a plurality of switching modules arranged to receive a DC electricity supply and generate an AC electricity supply for driving a load from the received DC electricity supply, the AC electricity supply being generated by the switching of the plurality of switching modules between a conducting state and a non-conducting state. The method comprises receiving one or more characteristics associated with each of the switching modules, comparing, for each switching module of the plurality of switching modules, a characteristic of the switching module with an equivalent characteristic associated with one or more other switching modules of the plurality of switching modules, and controlling a time period during which one or more of the plurality of switching modules are in the conducting state in accordance with a result of the comparison.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2013Date of Patent: February 13, 2018Assignee: NIDEC CONTROL TECHNIQUES LIMITEDInventors: Simon David Hart, Michael Cade, Richard Mark Wain

Patent number: 9223321Abstract: A method of reducing periodic disturbances in the feedback quantity of a controlled system is disclosed. The method includes receiving a feedback signal and repeatedly deriving respective magnitudes of harmonic components of the feedback signal to produce corresponding error signals. The error signals and harmonic components are used to generate harmonic control signals. The harmonic control signals are used to create a plurality of negative feedback loops acting to reduce the error signals. The present disclosure thus provides negative feedback control in the frequency domain. In one specific disclosed embodiment, the control is tied to the periodic domain resulting from the rotation of an actuator motor shaft.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2013Date of Patent: December 29, 2015Assignee: CONTROL TECHNIQUES LIMITEDInventor: Michael Cade

Patent number: 9052733Abstract: A method is provided for determining a value for an electrical output of a converter of renewable energy. The method comprises obtaining a signal representing the electrical output of the converter wherein that electrical output has an initial value. The method further comprises applying a pulse signal to the signal representing the electrical output, wherein the pulse signal comprises a positive portion and a negative portion. The method further comprises obtaining a measurement of electrical power produced by the converter during application of the pulse signal, removing the pulse signal and then obtaining a measurement of electrical power produced by the converter in the absence of the pulse signal. An error value is determined from the obtained electrical power measurements and that error value is applied to the initial value to obtain a target value for the electrical output of the converter.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2012Date of Patent: June 9, 2015Assignee: CONTROL TECHNIQUES LTDInventors: Scott Alan Meredith-Jones, Stephen Turner, Michael Cade

Patent number: 7431675Abstract: A ratchet tensioner is disclosed for a chain enclosed within a casing that does not have a removable cover. The tensioner including a body for mounting on the exterior of the casing, a plunger slidably mounted in the body and urged in use into the interior of the casing to deflect a run of the chain laterally in order to increase tension in the chain. The plunger is formed with ratchet teeth which interact with a pawl that is pivotably mounted on the body to permit movement of the plunger only in the direction to increase chain tension. In the invention, a pin is provided for inhibiting pivoting movement of the pawl during installation of the tensioner, the pin being retractable from outside the casing in order to free the pawl after the tensioner has been mounted on the casing.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2006Date of Patent: October 7, 2008Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Kevin Maile, Jonathan Coles, Michael Cade
