Abstract: A method for delivering a therapeutic agent to a human brain by delivering systemically a therapeutic agent and applying low intensity pulsed ultrasound (“LIPU”) to the brain in the presence of circulating microbubbles. The therapeutic agent is delivered prior to applying LIPU if it has a plasma half-life of ?1 h, and the therapeutic agent is delivered after applying LIPU if it has a plasma half-life of <1 h. In a second disclosed method, a first therapeutic agent is delivered systemically, LIPU is applied to the brain in the presence of circulating microbubbles, and a second therapeutic agent is delivered systemically. Also provided is a method for treating a brain disorder in a human by delivering a therapeutic agent systemically, administering a microbubble solution, and applying LIPU to the brain for a period of 1 min. to 30 min.
