  • Publication number: 20080148564
Abstract: A turbine assembly for a gas turbine engine. The turbine assembly includes at least one stator assembly including a radially inner band and at least one stator vane that extends radially outward from the inner band. The stator vane includes an airfoil having a root portion adjacent to the inner band and a tip portion. The airfoil also includes at least one lean directional change that is defined between the root portion and the tip portion. The turbine assembly also includes at least one turbine blade assembly that includes at least one rotor blade. The blade assembly is coupled in flow communication with the stator assembly such that an axial spacing is defined therebetween. The axial spacing defined adjacent to the at least one lean directional change is wider than the axial spacing defined adjacent to the root portion.

  • Publication number: 20080089775
Abstract: A gas turbine engine plasma blade tip clearance control system includes an annular shroud surrounding rotatable blade tips and an annular plasma generator spaced radially outwardly and apart from the blade tips. An exemplary embodiment of the annular plasma generator is mounted to the annular shroud and includes radially inner and outer electrodes separated by a dielectric material disposed within an annular groove in a radially inwardly facing surface of the annular shroud. The plasma generator is operable for producing an annular plasma between the annular shroud and blade tips and an effective clearance produced by the annular plasma between the annular shroud and blade tips that is smaller than a clearance between the annular shroud and blade tips.

  • Patent number: 7340968
Abstract: A motor torque measurement system includes a motor in communication with a gyro, a centrifuge rotor connected to the gyro, a housing surrounding the rotor and motor, and a controller in communication with the motor. The controller is connected to a back EMF measurement device, which measures the back EMF of the motor, and is also configured to measure motor rotational speed. The back EMF coefficient (Ke) and motor torque constant (Kt) can be calculated therefrom and the actual motor performance thereby determined. Motor magnet temperature may also be calculated. Back EMF and motor rotational speed measurements may be taken with the motor coasting.

  • Patent number: 7249928
Abstract: A turbine nozzle for a gas turbine engine includes a nozzle segment having an airfoil-shaped vane with a root, a tip, a leading edge, a trailing edge and opposed curved pressure and suction sides. An arcuate inner band segment is attached to the root of the vane. The inner band segment includes an inner flowpath surface bounded at forward and aft ends thereof by a forward-facing surface and an aft-facing surface, respectively. A convex curved blended corner is formed between the inner flowpath surface and the aft-facing surface.

  • Patent number: 7134842
Abstract: A turbine stage includes a row of airfoils joined to corresponding platforms to define flow passages therebetween. Each airfoil includes opposite pressure and suction sides and extends in chord between opposite leading and trailing edges. Each platform has a scalloped flow surface including a bulge adjoining the pressure side adjacent the leading edge, and a bowl adjoining the suction side aft of the leading edge.

  • Patent number: 6943509
Abstract: Kinetic energy of a rotor is substantially prevented from exceeding a predetermined amount of kinetic energy by determining a first kinetic energy of the rotor spinning at a first rotational velocity and determining whether the first kinetic energy exceeds the predetermined amount of kinetic energy. In addition, torque being applied to the rotor is modulated in response to the first kinetic energy exceeding the predetermined amount of kinetic energy. In this manner, the rotor is spun at a relatively slower rotational velocity than the first rotational velocity.

  • Patent number: 6638203
Abstract: In a centrifuge comprising a drive shaft assembly, a diaphragm disposed about the drive shaft assembly reduces noise and vibration. The diaphragm permits the drive shaft assembly to pivot off a vertical axis while substantially limiting horizontal displacement thereof. Also, where a centrifuge includes a rotor shaft and a drive shaft, a member situated between the rotor shaft and the drive shaft substantially limits vertical displacement of the rotor shaft while allowing angular deflection of the rotor shaft with respect to the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 6063017
Abstract: A method and apparatus which are capable of controlling the motion of a rotor body fragment after a rotor failure has occurred within a centrifuge assembly which comprises a rotor body, a centrifuge chamber and a centrifuge lid. The moment of the rotor body fragment can be controlled such that it moves along the centrifuge chamber away from the centrifuge lid by any of the following: (a) adjusting the center of gravity of the rotor such that it is below the strike point plane of the rotor; (b) adjusting the shape of the centrifuge chamber to conform to the rotor body shape; (c) sloping the guard ring such that the lower portion is furthest away from the centrifuge chamber; (d) varying the strength or stiffness of the guard ring or centrifuge chamber at or above the center of gravity of the rotor body fragment; and (e) adding a ring member to the top of the centrifuge rotor body.
