Publication number: 20230054208Abstract: A diagnostic system for a motor grader with a blade, a drawbar member, and a center shift mounting member associated with a drawbar-circle-moldboard (DCM) includes actuators connecting the blade to the DCM and interconnecting other components of the motor grader. The actuators affect movement of the blade relative to the DCM and affect movement of the other interconnected components relative to each other. Sensors generate signals indicative of a current position of the blade and positions of the other components of the motor grader. An input device receives an operator input indicative of a selection of predefined, diagnostic positions that can be checked visually by the operator for confirmation of proper operation. A controller selectively actuates the actuators based on the selection of a diagnostic position and a signal indicative of the current position of the blade to move the blade and other components of the motor grader into the selected diagnostic position.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2021Publication date: February 23, 2023Applicant: CATERPILLAR INC.Inventors: Jeffrey Lee Kuehn, Michael Charles Gentle, Dustin James Funk, Joshua Leigh Jordan, Cole Thomas Lindeman

Publication number: 20220042281Abstract: A work machine includes a frame; an engine supported by the frame; a plurality of ground engaging devices supporting the frame and driven by the engine; an operator cabin supported by the frame; a plurality of sensors and input devices configured to provide a plurality of signals; and a control module. The control module is configured to receive the plurality of signals from the plurality of sensors and input devices, determine if any of the plurality of signals is a positive signal, where a positive signal indicates that an operator is present in the machine, indicate an ‘operator present’ status if at least one of the plurality of signals remains positive for a debounce time, and indicate a ‘no operator present’ status if none of the plurality of signals remains positive for a threshold time.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 4, 2020Publication date: February 10, 2022Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Michael Charles Gentle, Ethan Michael Tevis, Dustin James Funk, Joshua Leigh Jordan, Kurt William Hoch, Jesse Gerald Grant Fair

Patent number: 10620004Abstract: A surveying system is provided having a work machine with at least one sensor configured to produce a signal indicative of a longitudinal pitch of the work machine and a lateral roll of the work machine. The work machine additionally includes a locating device configured to determine the location of the work machine, a communicating device configured to communicate over a network, and a controller in communication with the at least one sensor and the locating device. The controller is configured to receive the signals from the at least one sensor, create survey data by linking the signals with the location of the work machine, and communicate the survey data using the communicating device over the network to one or more offboard controllers. At least one offboard controller is configured to compare the survey data to one or more threshold values, calculate variances, and generate a map displaying the variances.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2017Date of Patent: April 14, 2020Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Michael Charles Gentle, Daniel Patrick Gillen, Ethan Michael Tevis

Patent number: 10316491Abstract: A control system is disclosed for use with a machine. The control system may have a first blade mountable to the machine and configured to engage a ground surface below the machine, and at least a first actuator configured to move the first blade. The control system may also have a second blade mountable to the machine and configured to engage the ground surface below the machine, and at least a second actuator configured to move the second blade. The control system may additionally have a controller in communication with the at least a second actuator. The controller may be configured to determine a first position of the first blade, and to automatically cause the at least a second actuator to move the second blade to a second position based on the first position of the first blade.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2016Date of Patent: June 11, 2019Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Michael Charles Gentle, Daniel Patrick Gillen
