    Abstract: In embodiments, a processing device detects a margin line in a model of a preparation from one or more images. The processing device determines, for each segment of a plurality of segments of the margin line, a quality score for the segment. The processing device determines that a segment of the margin line has a quality score that is below a quality threshold, wherein the segment of the margin line was generated based on a first set of images. Responsive to determining that the segment of the margin line has the quality score that is below the quality threshold, the processing devices updates the three-dimensional model of the preparation by replacing a portion of the three-dimensional model associated with the segment of the margin line with image data from at least one of a new image or a second set of images.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a metallic part in a weldable material by solid freeform fabrication comprising generating three dimensional model of the part, slicing the three dimensional model into a set of parallel, sliced layers and then dividing each layer into a set of one-dimensional pieces and, with reference to layered weld-bead geometry data, forming a computer-generated, direction specific, layered model of the part. The method also comprises uploading the layered model into a welding control system and directing the welding control system to deposit a sequence of one-dimensional weld beads of the weldable material onto the supporting substrate in a pattern required to form a first layer of the layered model and depositing a second welded layer onto the previous deposited layer in a configuration the same as the second layer, and repeating each successive weld bead until the entire part is completed.

    Abstract: The invention provides an economical laser welding method for joining two metal materials with a fillet joint. The method reliably compensates for tolerances between the two materials and can be used in various light conditions and production environments. In addition, the method does not require additional equipment for purposes of seam tracking. Instead, the method includes oscillating a laser beam, for example in a “figure 8” pattern, while moving the laser beam laterally along an interface between the two materials. The width of the fillet joint is increased compared to the fillet joint that would be formed using a non-oscillating laser beam, and thus compensates for the tolerances. The width of the fillet joint depends on the oscillation amplitude of the laser beam, rather than the beam size.
