Patent number: 9864978Abstract: A Master device (e.g., a SIM card) is configured with information regarding one or more Slave devices (e.g., SIM cards) that are associated with the Master device. The Master device is installed in a user device that receives content files and access and usage rights from a content provider. The Master device identifies one or more Slave devices that are associated with the Master device and transmits content files and the rights data to the Slave devices. A user device in which a Slave device is installed receives the content files and rights data sent by the Master device. The Slave device extracts a key from the rights data and provides the key to a decryption component of the user device, which uses the key to decrypt the content file.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2008Date of Patent: January 9, 2018Assignee: GOOGLE TECHNOLOGY HOLDINGS LLCInventor: Michael D. Patent number: 8532611Abstract: A method and apparatus determines whether a wireless apparatus (106a) that is operative to communicate over both a wireless wide area network (104) and a wireless local area network (102), will allow shared use of its short range wireless resources, such as LAN radio frequency bandwidth, optical bandwidth or other local area wireless resources, with other proximal wireless units (106b-106n) in the wireless local area network (102). In addition, the method and apparatus generated reward data (116) to provide a reward, such as free telephone calls, account credits, price reductions, or other rewards, so that a billing system is updated when a wireless apparatus (106a-106n) has been designated as allowing shared use of its wireless resources by other proximal wireless units.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2006Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventor: Michael D. Patent number: 8116733Abstract: A wireless mobile device (104) provides challenge/response based authentication by receiving a first portion of a challenge (132) from an external authentication unit (102), such as a network unit, and utilizes an internal partial challenge generator (114) that internally provides a second portion of the challenge (138) and provides the internally generated second portion of the challenge (138) back to the authentication unit (102). The wireless mobile device (104) also includes combiner logic (116) that combines the externally received first portion of the challenge (132) with the internally produced second portion of the challenge (138) to produce a complete challenge (144). The wireless mobile device (104) then utilizes a response generators (118) that takes the complete challenge (144) that was produced and generates a response (146) based on the complete challenge (144), and other secret information (110) if desired using a suitable cryptographic operation.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2005Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Motorola Inc.Inventor: Michael D. Patent number: 7697450Abstract: Techniques are provided for allowing a node (300) in an ad hoc network to deterministically decide whether to relay broadcast information to another node in the ad hoc network. The node (300) receives broadcast information and measures received signal strength (RSS) of the broadcast information. The node (300) may determine if the measured RSS is below a low threshold, and if so, can relay the broadcast information to neighbor nodes. Otherwise, the node (300) can also determine if the measured RSS is above a high threshold, and if not, wait for a waiting period before relaying the broadcast information to the neighbor nodes. The node (300) may dynamically adjust the low threshold by decreasing the low threshold as the number of neighbor nodes increases and may dynamically adjust the high threshold by increasing the high threshold as the number of neighbor nodes decreases.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2005Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Thomas V. Patent number: 7688835Abstract: A communication system and a method of communicating data. A first backhaul site can be dynamically selected from a plurality of backhaul sites that are each configured to wirelessly communicate with an access point. A controller can dynamically configure a transmission parameter used to communicate a first backhaul data stream between the access point and the first backhaul site. The first backhaul data stream can be derived from a source data stream and can be wirelessly communicated between the access point and the first backhaul site. A second backhaul site also can be selected. A second backhaul data stream also can be derived from the source data stream and wirelessly communicated between the access point and the second backhaul site. The first and second backhaul data streams can be combined.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2006Date of Patent: March 30, 2010Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Michael D. Kotzin, Hao Bi, Brian K. Patent number: 7684813Abstract: A radiotelephone method includes detecting other mobile stations and identifying possible relay candidates among the other mobile stations. The method then includes communicating information about the candidates to a base station. Communication with a second mobile station is requested of the base station at a first mobile station. If the first mobile station and the second mobile station are physically close, the base station instructs the first mobile station and the second mobile station to establish direct communication.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2003Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Maya Benson, Michael D. Kotzin

Patent number: 7593376Abstract: A method and apparatus for electing broadcast relay nodes (520B, H, M) in an ad hoc network (500). Each node (520A-520O) generates an attribute message including associated parameters. Each node (520A-520O) generates a weighted value (WV) based on the parameters. The WV can be included in the attribute message for that node, can provide a metric for ranking that node to be nominated to be a broadcast relay node, can alternatively provide a probability measure for that node to probabilistically elect itself as a broadcast relay node. The broadcast manager node (520C) receives the attribute messages and elects at least one nominated node as a broadcast relay node (520B, H, M) based on the attribute messages. Each node (520A-520O) can also initiate election of an intermediate broadcast relay node if that node fails to receive a test message within a predetermined time.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2005Date of Patent: September 22, 2009Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Thomas V. D'Amico, Jeffrey D. Bonta, Randy L. Ekl, Avinash Joshi, Michael D. Kotzin, Surender Kumar, Whay Chiou Lee, Peggy K. Matson

Publication number: 20090140602Abstract: The present invention provides a method for mitigating an unintended-mechanical strain in a device (100). The method includes transducing (304) strain-energy in the device to electrical-potential energy. This strain-energy develops due to unintended-mechanical strain. The unintended-mechanical strain is generated due to an impact force received by the device. Further, the method includes dissipating (306) the electrical-potential energy. The electrical-potential energy is dissipated via an electrical-circuit (204) in the device.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 3, 2007Publication date: June 4, 2009Applicant: MOTOROLA, INC.Inventors: MARTIN R. PAIS, SHUMIN CHENG, MICHAEL D KOTZIN

Publication number: 20090061862Abstract: If the mobile station (101) locates a peer it will request network metadata and may obtain location related services or service lists. The mobile station (101) negotiates with one of more peers (103) to share the work load of background scanning for network services. After successful negotiation, any peers in the “discovery net” will report or advertise to each other of any newly discovered networks, or networks to which connectivity has been lost. Since the various mobile stations may, when powered on, scan periodically for network changes, the metadata stored on the mobile station (101) will be dynamic and will change periodically upon travels and/or encounters with additional peers. Because the peers (103) may also possess location information, the mobile station (101) may additionally adjust its scan to prioritize services advertised by those members of peers (103) that are located most proximate to the mobile station (101).Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2007Publication date: March 5, 2009Inventors: William P. Alberth, JR., Armin W. Klomsdorf, Michael D. Kotzin, Eric L. Krenz, James E. Mitzlaff, James P. Phillips, Lorenzo A. Ponce De Leon, Charles B. Swope
