    Abstract: A swinging device pivotally suspended from an overhead support adjacent a tapping converter telescopically positions a boom for relative vertical tilting and swinging motion toward and away from said converter on an arcuate path on a vertical plane. The boom supports a boom extension and jaws on the boom extension releaseably hold a slag retaining device so that the same can be moved into the converter and positioned in the tap hole thereof.

  • Device for introducing gas into molten metal in controlled streams

    Abstract: A solid non-permeable refractory plug has a spaced stainless steel jacket and is located in a pocket block for incorporation in the normal refractory brick lining of a ladle to provide a structure through which gas can be introduced into the molten metal. An upstanding arcuate deflector on the stainless steel jacket covers a substantial portion of the open upper end of the jacket to deflect gas flowing upwardly through the device into two separate and distinct streams resulting in an improved stirring action in the molten metal while serving to displace the molten metal that would otherwise tend to flow into the device and close the gas passageway.

    Abstract: A process of treating coke oven doors and jambs with a material containing micro micron particles of graphite in a liquid carrier is described that forms a penetrating lubricating adhesive coating on the coke oven doors and jambs which acts to prevent leakage of tar and other coke by-products as heretofore common in the art and the resultant inability of maintaining a sealing relation between the doors and jambs.
