  • Publication number: 20100331991
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for performing knee arthroplasty, including, but not limited to, bicruciate retaining knee arthroplasty, are described herein. Methods and apparatus for preparing a distal femur for a femoral implant as well as methods and apparatus for preparing a proximal tibia for a tibial implant are described. These methods and apparatus, in at least some embodiments and uses, facilitate decreasing the complexity of knee arthroplasty procedures such as bicruciate retaining procedures, while maintaining, if not improving on, the safety, accuracy and/or effectiveness of such procedures.

  • Publication number: 20100268348
Abstract: A system and method for placing a prosthetic acetabular cup within an acetabulum are disclosed. The system may comprise an acetabular cup with an eccentric socket. The acetabular cup may be substantially hemispherical with a cup rim and a portion of the cup rim removed defining a relief. The cup may accommodate a concentric liner in an eccentric position. Screw apertures may be present on the periphery of the cup and the screw trajectories may converge toward the dome of the cup. The cup is attached to a tool which is offset relative to the cup because of the substantially eccentric socket. The relief, when the cup is secured to the acetabulum, is positioned substantially anterior and the socket is positioned more posterior to provide a more natural center of rotation of a femoral head within the socket. The first relief reduces impingement of the acetabular cup on soft tissue.

  • Patent number: 5879405
Abstract: An improved acetabular cup prosthesis has a cup body with inner convex and outer concave surfaces. The cup body has an apex and a base that defines a plane. The cup body outer convex surface has a curved annular portion between the base and the transition. In one embodiment, the outer convex surface is a curved annular surface extending in between the rim and a distance about two fifths to three fifths (2/5-3/5) of the distance between the rim and the apex. In another embodiment, a plurality of cup bodies are provided in a range of sizes between about 40 mm and 80 mm. Each cup body has a companion rotary reamer that is correspondingly shaped. The companion cup body is oversized between about 1 mm and 3 mm so that a generally constant change in volume is provided for all cup sizes between 40 mm and 80 mm.

Abstract: An improved acetabular cup prosthesis has a cup body with inner convex and outer concave surfaces. The cup body has an apex and a base that defines a plane. The cup body outer convex surface has a toroidally shaped portion between the base and the transition. In one embodiment, the outer convex surface is toroidally shaped between the rim and a distance about one third of the distance of the rim to the apex.

  • Patent number: 5676704
Abstract: An improved acetabular cup prosthesis has a cup body with correspondingly shaped outer convex and inner concave surfaces. The cup body has an apex and a base that defines a plane. The cup body outer convex surface has first and second curved, shaped portions positioned in between the base and the apex. In one embodiment, the outer convex surface has specially shaped portion in between the rim and a distance about one third of the distance of the rim to the apex. This specially shaded portion forms an interference fit with a patient's acetabular socket.

  • Patent number: 5549702
Abstract: An orthopaedic prosthesis for implantation in a patient's intramedullary canal includes a prosthesis body and a removable prosthesis stem portion that is connectable to the prosthesis body at the lower end portion of the prosthesis body. The stem is formed of an elongated stem member that is preferably conically shaped, having an inner elongated conical core with proximal and distal end portions. A helical portion extends around the core beginning at a position adjacent to the proximal end and terminating at a position adjacent to the distal end. The stem and body can be connectable using a wedge lock or taper-like connection. The prosthesis stem can provide a socket with internal threads for attaching a removal tool thereto.

  • Patent number: 5128846
Abstract: A fluorescent dyed polymer member and a light source are structurally arranged in a manner to efficiently gather light from the light source and then transmit the gathered light to a light utilization device. Light from the light source is gathered over a large area that is occupied by the polymer member. This gathered light is transmitted through the polymer member to an edge portion thereof having a relatively small light emitting area. Light is then emitted as an external beam having a cross section that corresponds to the physical shape of the edge of the polymer member, for example a straight of linear footprint of light. The area brightness of this external beam is greater than the area brightness of the initial light source.
