  • Patent number: 5361928
Abstract: A closure assembly for sealingly closing the open top end of a material holding drum includes a cover and a rubber gasket. The cover has a central circular wall of a size corresponding to the drum open end and a peripheral flange which defines a downwardly opening annular channel for receiving the drum top end. The channel has a pair of radially spaced sidewalls, and each of the sidewalls has an annular rib for defining a seal receiving space within the channel. An annular rubber gasket is provided in the seal receiving space and has a contoured surface seated on a rounded chime on the top of the drum. The ribs engage opposite sides of the gasket to prevent lateral displacement of the gasket when the cover is fastened to the drum. An annular V-shaped groove on a top surface of the gasket defines a void between the gasket and the cover and in which a portion of the gasket is received when the gasket is deformed.

  • Patent number: 5299707
Abstract: A lock is provided for use with a container having an annular end portion defining a top opening and a radially outwardly opening annular recess. A top wall defines a removable cover overlying the opening. The lock includes an elongate band of synthetic resin operatively associated with and circumferentially surrounding the top wall with opposite ends spaced apart and having radially inwardly projecting securing structure receivable in the recess for securing the top wall to the container. A locking structure is provided for constricting the spaced ends of the band to urge the securing structure radially inwardly comprising a pair of radially out-turned tabs of a high-strength synthetic resin secured to opposite end portions of the band as by vibration welding. A locking lever is movable to an over center position for adjustably drawing the tabs toward each other and releasably locking the securing structure in the annular recess in the over center position.

  • Patent number: 5292026
Abstract: A closure is used with a container having an annular end portion defining a radially outwardly opening annular recess. The closure comprises a generally circular closure wall, a generally cylindrical continuous sidewall having an upper edge connected to the closure wall and a continuous annular lower edge. The sidewall has an inner diameter slightly greater than the outer diameter of the container annular end portion, and a radially inwardly extending ridge on an inside of the sidewall between the upper and lower ridges. The ridge has an inner diameter less than the container annular end portion outer diameter yet greater than an outer diameter of the annular recess so that when the closure is installed on the container at least one of the container end portion and the sidewall is temporarily deformed to permit reception of the ridge in the recess to lock the closure on the container.

  • Patent number: 5259526
Abstract: A closure is disclosed for use with a tubular container having an open end with a cylindrical connecting bead at the open end. The closure includes a circular wall and a peripheral connecting flange surrounding a peripheral edge of the connecting bead so that the circular wall closes the open end of the container. First and second coaxial reinforcement ribs depend downward from the circular wall to provide suitable reinforcement while eliminating crevices on the circular wall.

  • Patent number: 5215207
Abstract: A container disclosed herein comprises a tubular sidewall defining a peripherally enclosed space, the sidewall having an annular end portion defining an open end of the space. The end portion is provided with through openings spaced circumferentially about the open end. A plurality of blocks of a synthetic resin of a size and shape corresponding to a size and shape of the sidewall through openings are retained therein. A closure of synthetic resin has a U-shaped annular connecting portion receiving the end portion of the sidewalls. The sidewall is secured to the closure by vibrationally welding the connecting portion to the blocks.

  • Patent number: 5211304
Abstract: A closure assembly has a closure element which is releasably engaged with a shipping and storage container for selectively restricting the flow of fluid through a discharge outlet in the container. The closure element has a longitudinal axis with a first axial end received in the opening and a second axial end having a peripheral flange outside the container. An axially opening slot with oppositely inclined sidewalls is provided in the peripheral flange for seating an annular seal member, whereby the seal member is captured in sealing relation between the peripheral flange and the container for reducing leakage through the outlet. The seal member is a deformable ring which has an undeformed state in which a first surface on the ring engages an end wall of the slot and an arcuate second surface on the ring extends beyond the axial opening.

Abstract: A container disclosed herein comprises a tubular sidewall defining a peripherally enclosed space, the sidewall having an annular end portion defining an open end of the space. The end portion is provided with through openings spaced circumferentially about the open end. A closure of synthetic resin comprises a U-shaped annular connecting ring having opposed, facing walls and a turned connecting wall extending therebetween to define an annular channel. The channel receives the sidewall end portion, one of the walls including a plurality of blocks of synthetic resin integrally formed therewith and spaced circumferentially about the one wall facing the other wall and of a size corresponding to a size of the sidewall through openings to be received therein. The sidewall is secured to the closure by vibrationally welding the connecting portion other wall to the blocks.

  • Patent number: 5131557
Abstract: A flanged belt is used with a closure and a container. The closure comprises a generally circular closure wall, a generally cylindrical sidewall having an upper edge connected to the closure wall and an annular lower edge that can have generally circumferentially spaced slits where the sidewall can be cut to allow for access to the container's internal storage space. The sidewall has a radially outwardly opening annular recess. The flanged belt comprises a long, thin, flexible strap having an outer side and an inner side. The flanges are circumferentially spaced and longitudinally extend along the inner side of the belt. Each flange defines a parallelepiped. The flanges are spaced apart at a distance slightly greater than the distance between reinforcement ribs contained in the sidewall annular recess.

  • Patent number: 4813592
Abstract: A sealing closure for lined liquid-permeable drums permitting the drums to be used for storing and shipping liquids. The drum may be formed of conventional fiberboard having a liquid-impermeable liner on the inner surface thereof. The closure is formed of a liquid-impermeable synthetic resin having a peripheral portion sealingly clamped to the liner by a clamp ring. The clamp ring is formed from a cylindrical metal ring into a turned configuration providing improved sealing clamping between the peripheral portion of the closure and the liner on the drum.

  • Patent number: 4805798
Abstract: A container having a tubular sidewall. A closure is mounted to one end of the sidewall by molding in situ. The sidewall end portion is provided with an array of circumferentially spaced through openings, and the closure includes a U-shaped connecting portion having a pair of spaced legs on opposite sides of the end portion, with securing portions extending between the legs through the openings. The closure is injection molded so as to clamp the end portion of the tubular element between the legs and sealingly connect the closure thereto. At the opposite end, a connecting ring is formed in situ on the end portion of the tubular element in the same manner as the connecting portion of the first described closure. The connecting ring includes a radially outwardly opening annular recess adapted to receive an inturned complementary flange on a removable closure member. The flange is split and the removable closure member is provided with a pair of tabs.
