Patent number: 10054534Abstract: Systems and methods batch calibrate environmental sensors. Candidate environmental sensors and a high-performance reference sensor are located in an enclosure with a particle excitation system that controls the particle concentration in the enclosure. The calibration process includes multiple phases with different particle concentrations, and the candidate and reference sensors continuously report their particle counts to a calibration server during these phases. Based on the collected data, the calibration server: (i) identifies for removal candidate sensors with outlying behavior through statistical analysis; and (ii) computes calibration values for the particle count estimation algorithms for the remaining candidate sensors that are optimized to minimize the error relative to the reference sensor(s).Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2016Date of Patent: August 21, 2018Assignee: Airviz Inc.Inventors: Illah Nourbakhsh, Joshua Schapiro, Michael D. Patent number: 5016167Abstract: In a multiprocessor system with an interleaved memory, predicted busy terms for interleaves of the main store being accessed are sent to each processor in the system, so that they will not waste pipe flows making requests to the busy interleaves. The predicted busy term is lowered before access to the interleaves is complete, to allow for the latency between the time the processor sets up the request and the time the main store system receives it. Contention occurs when several processors request access to the same interleave of main store. To detect deadlocks, a counter for each processor keeps track of the number of consecutive requests from that processor which have been rejected. Once the number reaches a threshold for a first processor, its counter initiates a state machine which inhibits other processors from making requests to the main store until the first processor is successful in gaining access.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1987Date of Patent: May 14, 1991Assignee: Amdahl CorporationInventors: Kham X. Patent number: 5002836Abstract: A metal matrix composite comprises essentially-aligned, fine-diameter inorganic oxide fibers embedded in a metal matrix material such as a light metal, for example aluminium or magnesium or an alloy thereof. In a particular embodiment the fibers are nominally-continuous and preferably are of mean diameter below 5 microns. The composite can be made by liquid infiltration of a fiber preform comprising the fibres bound together with an inorganic or an organic binder or (in the case of short fibers) by extrusion of a mixture, for example a suspension, of the fibers and powdered metal matrix material.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1989Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries PLCInventors: John Dinwoodie, Michael D. Patent number: 4920536Abstract: In a data processing system in which a processor has a cache receiving data staged from at least two main memories. Performance is enhanced by providing an indicator identifying the main memory from which data is staged. When data in the cache is destaged, the indicator is used to direct the destaged data to the proper main memory. If an error occur in the indicator, the data will be destaged to each main memory where a check is made on the address of the data to determine whether the main memory is the source of the destaged data. The data is stored in a main memory only if the memory is the source thereof.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1988Date of Patent: April 24, 1990Assignee: Amdahl CorporationInventors: Gary N. Hammond, Michael D. Taylor, Nongnuch Taylor

Patent number: 4888689Abstract: An apparatus and method for use in improving cache storage unit utilization during an interlock of an instruction pipeline generates a control signal during one cycle of the interlock if the interlocked instruction may require storage unit management work. In response to the control signal, selector control logic in the storage unit generates a priority signal indicating the interlocked instruction for selection by the storage unit for processing. In response to the control signal and the priority signal, the cache management logic is used during the interlock on the interlocked instruction to prepare for supplying needed data when the interlock is released.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1986Date of Patent: December 19, 1989Assignee: Amdahl CorporationInventors: Michael D. Taylor, Robert M. Maier, Michael J. Begley, Allan J. Zmyslowski, Jeffrey A. Thomas, Joseph A. Petolino

Patent number: 4851993Abstract: Bypassing of data from a main storage unit to an instruction and operand processing unit around an intermediate storage unit improves performance in a data processing system. The instruction and operand processing unit supplies requests for operands to the intermediate storage unit or cache. If the line is missing from the cache, the request operand is retrieved from the main storage unit. A bypass data path is connected between the main storage unit, prior to error detecting means in the cache, and the instruction and operand processing unit for transferring requested operands to the instruction and operand processing unit directly. Control, coupled to receive requests for operands and to the instruction and operand processing unit, signals the instruction and operand processing unit to receive the requested operands from the bypass data path when the data includes a requested operand.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1987Date of Patent: July 25, 1989Assignee: Amdahl CorporationInventors: Jack Chen, Jeffrey A. Thomas, Joseph A. Petolino, Jr., Michael J. Begley, Ajay Shah, Michael D. Taylor, Richard J. Tobias

Patent number: 4818633Abstract: A metal matrix composite comprises randomly-oriented inorganic oxide fibres of density below 3 g/ml embedded in a metal matrix material such as a light metal, for example aluminium or magnesium or an alloy thereof. In a particular embodiment the fibres are of density 1.8 to 2.5 g/ml and preferably are of mean diameter from 2 to 10 microns. The composite can be made by liquid infiltration of a fibre preform comprising the fibres bound together with an inorganic or an organic binder or by extrusion of a mixture of the fibres and a powdered metal matrix material.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1986Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries PLCInventors: John Dinwoodie, Martyn H. Patent number: 4792478Abstract: A fibre product comprising fine-diameter inorganic oxide fibres, for example alumina fibres, which can be compressed to increase the volume fraction of fibres to at least 0.25 without excessive damage to the fibres. In a preferred embodiment the fibres are nominally-continuous and essentially-aligned and such a product is made by blow-spinning through a converging duct and collection on a wind-up drum. The product may be in the form of a mat or blanket, a tape or a woven material.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1986Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: Imperial Chemical Industries PLCInventors: Michael D. Taylor, Martyn H. Stacey, Jeffrey S. Kenworthy, Stuart S. Boffey

Patent number: 4791642Abstract: A data processing machine including an instruction and operand processing complex. The instruction and operand processing complex generates results during execution of some instructions. When results are generated, a request to store the results in a high speed cache is generated. The cache receiving the request to store the results includes means for detecting errors in a line in the storage means to which the results are to be stored prior to writing the results to the line. If the line includes an error, a means for correcting the error reads to the line from the cache, corrects the error and restores the line. When the line is restored, the results are written to the cache and a correct ECC code is generated.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1986Date of Patent: December 13, 1988Assignee: Amdahl CorporationInventors: Michael D. Taylor, Shen H. Wang
