Patent number: 6397622Abstract: A counter flow, re-circulating, externally refrigerated auger type chiller. The chiller has a tank that is semi-cylindrical in shape so that the walls of the tank conform closely to the circular cross section of the auger. By minimizing the gap between the walls of the tank and the outer edges of the rotating auger, the counter flowing chilled water is forced to flow in the helical path determined by the auger. This assures a longer residence time for the chilled water in the auger, more thorough and more intimate contact between the poultry carcasses and the chilled water, and thus more efficient transfer of heat from the poultry carcasses to the chilled water.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2000Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Cooling & Applied Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael E. Miller, Andrew C. Estes

Patent number: 6358263Abstract: A system is provided for controlling the stopping position of a surgical cutting tool relative to a tissue entrance location of a cannula housing the cutting tool. A signal processor is responsive to a motor activation signal to provide a motor activation signal to a motor control unit for driving a motor, which activates the cutting tool positioned in a cannula. The signal processor is responsive to a motor stop signal and to a stop position signal to stop the cutting tool relative to the tissue entrance location of the cannula to thereby avoid trapping a portion of the tissue base between the cutting tool and a boundary of the cannula opening.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2001Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Promex, Inc.Inventors: Joseph L. Publication number: 20020024529Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for dynamically modifying both the luminance and contrast of an image as it is displayed on a display unit in response to changing lighting conditions. Sensors are utilized to continually measure the luminance of the light illuminating the display unit and the display surround luminance. Measurement signals generated by the light sensors are processed to provide display luminance and contrast adjustment control signals that gradually cause the adjustment of the display unit's luminance and contrast in response thereto. Continual adjustment of the luminance and contrast of a display unit according to changing lighting conditions such that the brightness and contrast perception of the displayed image remains constant under the varying conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2001Publication date: February 28, 2002Inventors: Michael E. Miller, James R. Niederbaumer

Publication number: 20010030706Abstract: A camera with: means for capturing an image of a real world scene as an image signal; storage means for storing captured images and from which stored images can be read; a screen; and a means for displaying on the screen a high resolution version of a stored image from a list of stored images when a location within the list is selected. The camera also has a means for displaying on the screen, when a browsing mode is selected, a scrolling strip of low resolution versions of stored images from the list. A single control allows a user to select the location within the list and which also allows a user to select the browsing mode. The camera can a user to move between full screen display of stored images and the browsing mode multiple times, with little repetitive finger and/or hand motion, without blocking viewing of the screen, and while allowing the hands to be retained in a convenient picture taking position.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2001Publication date: October 18, 2001Inventors: Michael E. Publication number: 20010030695Abstract: A method for customizing a digital camera for at least one particular user is disclosed. The digital camera includes a reprogrammable memory for storing firmware which controls the operation of the digital camera and a camera graphical user interface responsive to the firmware stored in the reprogrammable memory. The method includes providing customization software executed external to the digital camera which can access a plurality of firmware components having different camera features. A user selects desired camera features to cause the customization software to access the corresponding firmware component(s). The selected corresponding firmware component(s) are provided to the digital camera and the reprogrammable memory is reprogrammed to store the corresponding firmware component(s) to thereby customize the digital camera.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2000Publication date: October 18, 2001Inventors: Girish V. Publication number: 20010015760Abstract: A camera incorporates a working memory (124) for storing a working image corresponding to the last captured image. The working image is displayed on a display screen (36) in a quick review mode of operation in response to a quick review signal entered by the camera operator via a camera control interface (74) to control processing circuitry (68,72) of the camera. The processing circuitry controls the display screen to keep it in an inactive state until the quick review signal is entered, and returns it to an inactive state after a predetermined time period or when the quick review signal is discontinued to conserve energy. In addition, the working image is displayed in the quick review mode regardless of whether a non-volatile memory is available in the camera or, in the case of a hybrid camera, whether a film cartridge is contained in a film chamber (98) of the camera.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 20, 1997Publication date: August 23, 2001Inventors: PETER FELLEGARA, RICHARD W. Patent number: 6091930Abstract: A customizable interactive educational system 30 includes an assembly of data modules 60 which control the inputting, categorizing, and formatting of educational data which have been determined to be well-accepted principles. The well-accepted principles create a primary knowledge base stored as a professor customizable interactive textbook (CITbook) 40. The primary knowledge base is organized by at least subject matter, topic, and knowledge level and the data are linked to each other in predetermined sequences. Data managers 200 allow a professor teaching a course to select and manipulate portions of the primary knowledge base of the professor CITbook 40 to generate a customized student version 50 in accordance with the course being taught and personal data added by the professor. The data added or altered by the professor is visually distinguished from the well-accepted data.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1997Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Case Western Reserve UniversityInventors: J. Patent number: 6089037Abstract: A structural system for an auger type poultry chiller in which the air header and structural system are integrated together. A hollow box beam on the longitudinal upper edge of the housing of the chiller provides structural strength and ridigity to the housing. The box beam is airtight and the box beam is connected to a source of pressurized air so that the box beam also serves as an air header. Air hoses connect a series of connectors along the length of the box beam to inlets on the bottom of the chiller housing to introduce pressurized air to the chilled water to prevent clumping of the chilled poultry carcasses. The strength of the box beam air header allows the supports for the auger to be mounted directly to the top of the box beam. In order to provide mounting connections without sacrificing the airtight integrity of the box beam, one or more tubes are run vertically through the box beam at points of attachment for the auger support structure.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1999Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Cooling & Applied Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael E.
