The power converter is electrically coupled to the plug unit and is operable to regulate the received energy from the power socket and to output a power requirement to the mobile device. The controller allows current to flow to the over-voltage protection device only when an energy storage device is experiencing over-voltage. In allowing current to flow to the over-voltage protection device only when the voltage across the energy storage device is above a predetermined voltage, power conservation is achieved.

The method and apparatus may further include a rechargeable battery, a battery charger, a timing circuit, and a battery charger enabling circuit.

The method also includes, detecting a USB bus voltage at the USB interface, measuring passage of a predetermined amount of time upon detecting the USB bus voltage, and disabling at least one of the voltage regulator and the battery charger if the predetermined amount of time expires before an enumeration acknowledgement signal is received at the USB interface.
