  • Patent number: 8915714
Abstract: A partial pitch wind turbine is described wherein the wind turbine blade has an inner blade section designed for stall-controlled operation and an outer blade section designed for pitch-controlled operation. The different blade profiles for the different sections allow for the efficient operation of the blade while providing for the control of the wind turbine to effectively reduce blade root moments. The outer blade sections can be pitched out of the wind to reduce root moments due to the outer blade sections, while the increasing power capture of the inner blade section maintains nominal power output.

  • Patent number: 8803349
Abstract: A method for controlling the position of blades of a two-bladed wind turbine when extreme conditions are detected or forecast for the wind turbine. When extreme conditions are detected or forecast, the wind turbine blades are positioned in a horizontal arrangement, and actively yawed such that a tip of one of the wind turbine blades points into the wind direction. The blades are yawed such as to actively follow the changing wind direction, resulting in a reduced surface area of the blades exposed to the extreme wind forces, due to the spear-like arrangement of the turbine blades. This reduced surface area provides for a reduction in the extreme loads which may be experienced by the wind turbine in such extreme wind conditions.

  • Publication number: 20140219797
Abstract: The present invention relates a wind turbine comprising a wind turbine tower with a nacelle provided on the top to which a rotor hub with one or more wind turbine blades is rotatably mounted so that they form a rotor plane. A floating foundation having a upper section is mounted to the bottom of the wind turbine tower, wherein the foundation has a buoyant body configured to be installed at an offshore position having a water depth of about 40 m or more. The wind turbine blade comprises an inner blade section coupled to an outer blade section by a pitch junction in which a pitch mechanism is coupled to a pitch control system configured to regulate the pitch of the outer blade section relative to the inner blade section at wind speeds above a first wind speed. This allows the pitching to be used to counteract the tilting of the wind turbine caused by the different thrusts acting on the structure.

  • Patent number: 8727040
Abstract: Method and drill string valve assembly for closing a conduit through which a high pressure fluid flows. The drill string valve assembly includes first, second and third portions forming an elongated housing having an inside cavity; and a drill string valve provided inside the cavity, to extend from the first portion to the third portion. The second portion has an extension that fits inside a groove of the third portion and prevents the second portion to linearly move relative to the third portion and also allows the second portion to rotate relative to the third portion, and the second portion has a distal region provided with a thread configured to engage a corresponding thread of the first portion such that a rotation of the second portion relative to the third portion determines a tight connection between the first portion and the second portion.

  • Publication number: 20130296715
Abstract: A high-speed laser perfusion imaging instrument including a laser source, a detector, a signal-processing unit, data memory, and a screen to display results. A section of a sample surface is illuminated with laser light; reemitted light from the irradiated surface is collected by focusing optics on a 2D array of integrating photodetectors having elements that can be accessed individually or in a pre-defined selection of pixels at high speed. This 2D array measures intensity variations at each individual pixel. Average amplitude and mean frequency of the measured signal contain information about concentration and speed of moving blood cells. For real-time imaging, exposure time is used as a parameter to measure relative perfusion changes. These data are stored and processed with the signal-processing unit to deliver 2D flow maps of the illuminated sample section, and allow a simple overlay between a conventional image and processed flow maps.
