Publication number: 20120033900Abstract: Multi-layer bags may be formed to include first and second sidewalls joined along a first side edge, an opposite second side edge, and a closed bottom edge. The first and second layers may be non-continuously laminated together to include bonded regions in which the layers are bonded and unbonded regions in which the layers are not bonded. Such a bag may be described as a “bag-in-a-bag” type configuration in which the inner bag is non-continuously bonded to the outer bag. The inventors have surprisingly found that such configurations of non-continuous bonding provides increased and unexpected strength properties to the multi-layer films and bags.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2011Publication date: February 9, 2012Applicant: The Glad Products CompanyInventors: Robert W. Patent number: 8061899Abstract: A flexible storage bag for storing food items and the like is provided with a separation material positioned to cover an aperture disposed in and/or a one-way valve element attached to the storage bag. The separation material may be a non-woven material. When latent air remaining in the interior volume of the storage bag is exhausted through the aperture and/or one-way valve element, the air passes through the separation material. The separation material functions to remove liquids that may be entrained in the exhausting air. In an embodiment, the separation material may be treated with a low surface energy substance to improve the liquid removal function. In another embodiment, the separation material may be provided as a plurality of layers or as part of the one-way valve element.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2005Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: The Glad Products CompanyInventors: Dean A. Patent number: 7870708Abstract: A storage system for storing and preserving food items or the like includes a sealable storage bag having attached to it a one-way valve element that communicates with the interior volume of the storage bag. The system also includes an evacuation device that can be positioned over the one-way valve element to evacuate air entrapped in the interior volume via the valve element. To avoid possible damage to the storage bag, the valve element, or the stored food items, the evacuation device is configured to have a maximum evacuation pressure of 6 pounds per square inch absolute or greater. In an embodiment, to control the maximum evacuation pressure of the evacuation device, the evacuation device can include a pressure control feature which in further embodiments may be pressure activated or user selectable.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2007Date of Patent: January 18, 2011Assignee: The Glad Products CompanyInventors: Michael G. Publication number: 20100242417Abstract: An evacuation device may include an airflow redirecting baffle. The baffle may separate out liquids that may be entrained or suspended in air being withdrawn from vacuum storage containers in which food items are placed for vacuum preservation. The evacuation device may also include a nozzle that can interface with a valve element on the storage container. The nozzle aligns airflow in a first flow direction initially within the evacuation device. The baffle is positioned in the evacuation device such that, when airflow encounters the baffle, the airflow or a portion thereof is redirected or diverted in a second flow direction. Redirecting airflow from a first flow direction to a second flow direction causes high inertia liquids entrained in the airflow to impinge upon the baffle and thereby separate from the airflow. An absorbent material can be included to absorb and retain the separated fluids.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 15, 2008Publication date: September 30, 2010Inventor: Michael G. Borchardt

Patent number: 7798714Abstract: The flexible storage bag includes overlaying first and second sidewalls defining an internal volume that can be accessed from an open top edge. To evacuate air from the internal volume after the open top edge has been closed, the bag includes a one-way valve element attached to the first sidewall and communicating with the internal volume. To prevent the one-way valve element from becoming clogged by the opposing second sidewall, the bag also includes a clearance member that maintains at least a partial clearance between the first and second sidewalls proximate the valve element. The clearance member can take many forms such as a textured portion on the second sidewall that includes evacuation passages which provide air in the internal volume access to the valve element, a permeable element covering the valve element, and a rigid or compressible structure that spaces the second sidewall from the valve element.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2007Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: The Clorox CompanyInventors: Dean A. Zimmerman, Carl L. Bergman, Michael G. Borchardt

Publication number: 20100218461Abstract: A vacuum storage system can have a storage container such as a semi-rigid bowl or a flexible thermoplastic bag and an evacuation device for evacuating the container. To draw air from the storage container, the container can be equipped with a one-way valve element attached to a exterior sidewall of the container. The valve element can interface with a nozzle of the evacuation device. The valve element is adaptable between a normal condition in which the valve element is closed, and an altered position in which the valve element is opened. To alter the valve element, the evacuation device includes a contact feature that can contact and displace the valve element.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2008Publication date: September 2, 2010Inventors: Michael G. Borchardt, Scott W. Binger

Publication number: 20100177989Abstract: The bag may include a first sidewall, a second sidewall, a first fastening strip and a second fastening strip. The fastening strips may include a base portion having a pair of spaced-apart webs extending from the base portion. The webs may include hook portions extending from the webs. The fastening strips may have wide base portions. The fastening strips may have thick base portions. The fastening strips may provide a greater surface area for the user to apply a force during the occlusion process and may reduce the occlusion effort. The fastening strips may have a lower occlusion force. The fastening strips may provide improved alignment of the fastening strips. The fastening strips may have an improved perception of seal security with a high opening force and/or a high peel force.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 15, 2009Publication date: July 15, 2010Applicant: The Glad Products CompanyInventors: Ryan J. Coonce, Michael G. Borchardt

Publication number: 20100014789Abstract: A vacuum storage bag providing an interior volume for storing food items in an evacuated condition has air flexible sidewalls made of a gas permeable material. The gas permeable sidewalls can be made of multiple layers including a heat sealing innermost layer and a relatively stronger, outwardly disposed gas permeable layer. The heat sealing layer can be low density polyethylene to facilitate forming of the bag with heat seals and the stronger gas permeable layer can be high density polyethylene to provide the bag with sufficient strength and toughness. In various embodiments, the storage bag can include interlocking closure strips for releasably closing an opening, a one-way vacuum valve for evacuating the interior volume, and a textured portion along one sidewall to facilitate evacuation.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 5, 2007Publication date: January 21, 2010Inventors: Scott Binger, Michael G. Publication number: 20090290817Abstract: The flexible bag includes overlaying first and second sidewalls that provide an internal volume that can be accessed via an opening. To evacuate air from the internal volume after the open top edge has been closed, the bag includes a one-way valve element attached to the first sidewall. The bag is configured to prevent objects from clogging the valve element during evacuation. In one embodiment, the bag may include a plurality of ridges formed along the inner surface of at least one sidewall that can maintain separation of the sidewalls and contents from the valve element. In another aspect, the valve element is beneficially located at a top corner of the bag where the valve element is spaced apart from those locations in the bag where contents are likely to collect.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 4, 2009Publication date: November 26, 2009Inventor: Michael G.
