    Abstract: Multi-layer bags may be formed to include first and second sidewalls joined along a first side edge, an opposite second side edge, and a closed bottom edge. The first and second layers may be non-continuously laminated together to include bonded regions in which the layers are bonded and unbonded regions in which the layers are not bonded. Such a bag may be described as a “bag-in-a-bag” type configuration in which the inner bag is non-continuously bonded to the outer bag. The inventors have surprisingly found that such configurations of non-continuous bonding provides increased and unexpected strength properties to the multi-layer films and bags.

The closure device includes a first and a second interlocking fastening strips which are arranged to be interlocked over a predetermined length, at least one of the fastening strips having a surface alteration providing visual confirmation of occlusion of the closure device. The surface alteration may be a slit which opens or closes upon occlusion of said closure device. In one embodiment, the surface alteration may extend into a coextruded portion. The color of the coextruded portion is exposed when the surface alteration is open and hidden when the surface alteration is substantially closed.

    Abstract: A flexible storage bag for storing food items and the like is provided with a separation material positioned to cover an aperture disposed in and/or a one-way valve element attached to the storage bag. The separation material may be a non-woven material. When latent air remaining in the interior volume of the storage bag is exhausted through the aperture and/or one-way valve element, the air passes through the separation material. The separation material functions to remove liquids that may be entrained in the exhausting air. In an embodiment, the separation material may be treated with a low surface energy substance to improve the liquid removal function. In another embodiment, the separation material may be provided as a plurality of layers or as part of the one-way valve element.

    Abstract: A storage system for storing and preserving food items or the like includes a sealable storage bag having attached to it a one-way valve element that communicates with the interior volume of the storage bag. The system also includes an evacuation device that can be positioned over the one-way valve element to evacuate air entrapped in the interior volume via the valve element. To avoid possible damage to the storage bag, the valve element, or the stored food items, the evacuation device is configured to have a maximum evacuation pressure of 6 pounds per square inch absolute or greater. In an embodiment, to control the maximum evacuation pressure of the evacuation device, the evacuation device can include a pressure control feature which in further embodiments may be pressure activated or user selectable.

    Abstract: An evacuation device may include an airflow redirecting baffle. The baffle may separate out liquids that may be entrained or suspended in air being withdrawn from vacuum storage containers in which food items are placed for vacuum preservation. The evacuation device may also include a nozzle that can interface with a valve element on the storage container. The nozzle aligns airflow in a first flow direction initially within the evacuation device. The baffle is positioned in the evacuation device such that, when airflow encounters the baffle, the airflow or a portion thereof is redirected or diverted in a second flow direction. Redirecting airflow from a first flow direction to a second flow direction causes high inertia liquids entrained in the airflow to impinge upon the baffle and thereby separate from the airflow. An absorbent material can be included to absorb and retain the separated fluids.

The valve element is adaptable between a normal condition in which the valve element is closed, and an altered position in which the valve element is opened. To alter the valve element, the evacuation device includes a contact feature that can contact and displace the valve element.

    Abstract: A vacuum storage bag providing an interior volume for storing food items in an evacuated condition has air flexible sidewalls made of a gas permeable material. The gas permeable sidewalls can be made of multiple layers including a heat sealing innermost layer and a relatively stronger, outwardly disposed gas permeable layer. The heat sealing layer can be low density polyethylene to facilitate forming of the bag with heat seals and the stronger gas permeable layer can be high density polyethylene to provide the bag with sufficient strength and toughness. In various embodiments, the storage bag can include interlocking closure strips for releasably closing an opening, a one-way vacuum valve for evacuating the interior volume, and a textured portion along one sidewall to facilitate evacuation.
