  • Patent number: 7699609
Abstract: A device for the treatment of periodontal disease. The device includes a handle that has a configuration familiar to dental professionals and a cartridge that is locked into the handle when use, typically delivery of a composition to a periodontal pocket, is desired. The cartridge provides for effective delivery of compositions, such as agents, as its tip is deformable, typically from a circular to an oval shape so as to flatten. The deformation may be made either manually, by the dental professional, or upon contact with teeth or other tissues, whereby this flattened tip can penetrate deeply into periodontal pockets for quick and direct application of the composition, for example, therapeutic agents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 23, 2004
Date of Patent: April 20, 2010
    Assignee: Orapharma, Inc.
Inventors: James R. Lawter, Michael G. Lanzilotti, Mark Bates, Gregory H. Hunter

  • Patent number: 5622498
Abstract: Oral compositions for the local administration of a therapeutic agent to a periodontal pocket of a patient for alleviating dental disease comprise a plurality of dry, discrete microparticles each of which comprise an effective amount of at least one therapeutic agent dispersed in a matrix comprising a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer. Apparatus and methods are also provided for the dispensing of the dry microparticles to the periodontal pocket whereby they become tacky and adhere to the involved tissue so as to induce long term therapeutic benefits.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 22, 1993
Date of Patent: April 22, 1997
    Assignee: American Cyanamid Company
Inventors: Nancy S. Brizzolara, Michael G. Lanzilotti, James R. Lawter
  • Patent number: 5500228
Abstract: Oral compositions for the local administration of a therapeutic agent to a periodontal pocket of a patient for alleviating dental disease comprise a plurality of dry, discrete microparticles each of which comprise an effective amount of at least one therapeutic agent dispersed in a matrix comprising a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer of preferably, the dry microparticles and dispersed into the periodontal pocket whereby upon contact with the moist environment of the pocket, they hydrate, become tacky and adhere to one another and to the tissues surrounding the pocket so as to maintain intimate contact with the involved tissue so as to induce long term therapeutic benefits.

  • Patent number: 5143661
Abstract: There is disclosed a process for preparing compositions comprising microcapsules by phase separation microencapsulation wherein the hardening agent employed is a volatile silicone fluid and with the compositions prepared thereby. The use of the volatile silicone fluid as a hardening agent permits the production of microcapsules substantially free of any alkane hardening agent, eliminating potential combustability problems of the prior art processes and toxicity problems of the prior art compositions.
