Patent number: 7631721Abstract: A tilting chassis vehicle has a differential gear driving opposed half shafts (16,18). Each half shaft is connected to a respective wheel hub. Pivoting tie rods (24,26) are provided between the chassis (12) and these wheel hubs, and a control arm (48) is provided between the chassis and the differential carrier to constrain movement thereof. The arrangement gives a novel tilting vehicle with shaft drive and low centre of gravity.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2004Date of Patent: December 15, 2009Inventor: Michael Hobbs

Patent number: 6978259Abstract: An automated system adaptation technique for computer systems, networks and subsystems generally and, more particularly, for data storage systems. The invention programmatically designs, configures and manages a system, such as a data storage system. This is accomplished by performing a sequence of steps in an iterative loop, including analyzing the operation of the system under a workload, generating a new design based on the analysis and migrating the existing system to the new design. By systematically exploring a large design space and developing designs based on analyses of the workload, the invention generates designs that are improved in comparison to conventional design techniques. By programmatically repeating these tasks, the invention causes the system to converge to one that supports the workload without being over-provisioned.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2001Date of Patent: December 20, 2005Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Eric Anderson, Michael Hobbs, Kimberly Keeton, Susan Spence, Mustafa Uysal, Alistair Craig Veitch, John Wilkes

Patent number: 6832876Abstract: A machine tool 10 to fashion objects from blocks of material having a material-remover 16 able to move in at least two degrees of freedom and having the material 18 controlled by processing circuitry. The processing circuitry 18 determines a path along which the material-remover 16 should move, allowing the depth of a cut made by the material remover to vary. The movement of the material-remover 16 is so controlled to improve bulk material removal when compared to prior art machines.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2002Date of Patent: December 21, 2004Assignee: Delcam PLCInventor: Steven Michael Hobbs

Patent number: 5896855Abstract: An inhaler for inhalation of a medicament from a pierced capsule has a swirling or emptying chamber where the capsule is emptied by inhalation action of an operator. A rotary magazine for a multi-unit does inhaler which holds a number of capsules containing a medicament in a number of recesses arranged around the periphery of the magazine. The capsules are held in place by pins or plugs at both ends. Either the capsules are pierced before being loaded into the magazine or they are pierced by the pins when they are loaded into the magazine. In either case a seal may be provided around the ends of the capsules near the holes which are plugged to keep them fresh. When a recess is rotated to a particular position within the magazine then it releases its capsule. Contents of a capsule are drawn out during inhalation when the capsule is in the swirling chamber. A motor can be used to operate the magazine.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: Rhone-Poulenc Rorer LimitedInventors: Michael A. Hobbs, John R. Calvert, Robert S. Patent number: 5869673Abstract: The yield of monoaldehyde ##STR1## from 7-chloroquinaldine and isophthalaldehyde is increased to about 82% by using a 2 molar excess of isophthalaldehyde, conditions favoring precipitation of product during the reaction and recycling unreacted isophthalaldehyde. The recycling leads to a reduced net consumption of about 1.2 molar equivalents of isophthalaldehyde.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1998Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Merck & Co., Inc.Inventors: Hsien Hsin Tung, David Michael Hobbs

Patent number: 5522383Abstract: An inhaler for inhaling pulverulent medicament from within a capsule comprises a chamber (24) within which the capsule is free to rotate while having its longitudinal axis in the median plane of the chamber and thus generally parallel to the front and rear walls (30) and (31) of the chamber, by virtue of the fact that the spacing between said front and rear walls is less than the axial length of the capsule but just greater than the diameter of the capsule. The device includes pins (21) serving as opening means to pierce the ends of the capsule while it is seated in a recess (25), whereupon the retraction of the pins (21) allows the capsule to be entrained into swirling airflow in the chamber (24) during inhalation of air through air inlets (26) and out through a mouthpiece nozzle (27).Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1993Date of Patent: June 4, 1996Assignee: Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Ltd.Inventors: John R. Calvert, Robert S. Cook, Michael A. Hobbs, Ann-Marie Leighton, Gordon T. Simpkin, Roy Trunley, Anthony D. West
