Patent number: 6638668Abstract: A monolithic patterned dichroic filter array is mounted on a wafer by combining microelectronic and microlithography techniques. A wafer is coated with a photoresist. The assembly is masked, and the unmasked photoresist, after exposure to ultraviolet light, is developed to expose a predetermined section. That section of wafer is then over developed to create an undercut in its walls and to expose the underlying wafer. Dichroic filter material is then deposited onto the wafer by a cold process, and the photoresist layer is then removed, leaving only the dichroic filter material on the wafer. The process is repeated to create an array. The finished wafer is then bonded to a linear or two dimensional detector array, or to a glass window that is then bonded to a linear or two dimensional detector, to create a high performance spectral detector for spectroscopic imaging.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2001Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Ocean Optics, Inc.Inventors: Philip E. Buchsbaum, Michael J. Morris

Publication number: 20030068827Abstract: This invention relates to the field of optical chemical sensors which utilize indicator molecules to detect a particular analyte in a sample, wherein the indicator molecules produce a detectable response when exposed to the particular analyte to which the indicator molecule is sensitive. Specifically, this invention relates to the use of a matrix embedded within a membrane, where the matrix enhances the scattering of light and serves as a support which provides superior mechanical strength. The invention also relates to methods of using the improved sensor in conjunction with fiber optic probes.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 4, 2002Publication date: April 10, 2003Applicant: Ocean Optics, Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Morris, Mahmoud R. Shahriari

Patent number: 6432658Abstract: The invention provides a one-stage method of measuring antithrombin (AT) activity in a sample. In the method, a diluted sample is mixed with AT-deficient plasma containing intrinsic coagulation enzymes, an AT augmenting compound such as heparin, a phospholipid and an activator of the contact phase of the intrinsic coagulation pathway. Following addition of calcium ions, coagulation time is measured and compared to a reference standard to determine the level of AT activity in the sample.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2000Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignees: Affinity Biologicals, Inc., R2 Diagnostics, Inc.Inventors: Hugh W. Patent number: 5895305Abstract: A book wherein one or more of the covers or pages or binding is provided with a track, and a toy figure is movably coupled to the track. For this purpose, the cover(s) or page(s) which attach the toy figure have sufficient structural integrity to support the toy figure and the movement of the toy figure along the track. Preferably, the track is provided along the edge or periphery of a cover or page so that the toy figure may be moved around the periphery of the book even when the book is closed. The toy figure preferably takes the shape of an animal or other creature which is the subject of a story in the book. In this way, a young reader can easily correlate the movable toy figure with the story. The book is particularly useful in encouraging children to read.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1998Date of Patent: April 20, 1999Assignee: Reader's Digest Children's Publishing Inc.Inventors: David Stewart Cowley, Michael J. Morris

Patent number: 5681199Abstract: A book wherein one or more of the covers or pages are bound with a binding adapted for accepting a conduit, and a toy figure is movably extending within the conduit. The toy figure includes a top portion and an engaging portion. An activating device is also provided with the book. The activating device is actuated to extend the toy figure within the conduit using the bottom portion of the toy figure. A musical device may be provided within the conduit to generate a sound for a predetermined time period after the activating device is actuated.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1996Date of Patent: October 28, 1997Assignee: Joshua Morris Publishing, Inc.Inventor: Michael J. Patent number: 5413486Abstract: An interactive book or device having a mechanism for generating a plurality of sensory outputs in manner that maximizes the interaction between the user and the book or device. The interactive book includes function initiators for initiating a unique sensory output that corresponds to a visual indicia on a page of the book. A function level selector is coupled to the function initiators that selectively changes a function level and thereby selectively changes the sensory output corresponding to each function initiator. Consequently, the number of sensory outputs is increased and thereby enables greater interaction between the user and the book. It also encourages the user to creatively combine the sensory outputs to obtain a cognizable aggregate output.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: Joshua Morris Publishing, Inc.Inventors: Roger I. Burrows, Michael J. Morris

Patent number: 5226822Abstract: An interactive electronic game book is disclosed in which the pages of the book form game boards for educational or amusement-type games. An electronic randomizer unit is affixed to the back cover of the game book for providing randomly-selected instructions directing the games and allowing the player to interact with the game board pages. The randomizer unit may sequentially operate and randomly select one of a plurality of lights, which correspond to one of a set of game instructions provided on a page adjacent to the randomizer. Several different types of game boards may be contained within a single volume.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1992Date of Patent: July 13, 1993Assignee: Joshua Morris Publishing Inc.Inventor: Michael J.
