  • Patent number: 6426374
Abstract: This invention relates to foundry binder compositions that contain a divalent sulfur compound, and/or foundry mixes where the aggregate contains a divalent sulfur compound. The foundry binders and foundry mixes are used to make foundry shapes, e.g. molds and cores. The presence of sulfur in the foundry shape facilitates the removal of foundry shapes (particularly internal cores) from the metal casting which is made by pouring molten metal into a casting assembly in which the foundry shapes are arranged. The invention also relates to a method of preparing foundry shapes, the shapes prepared, a method of making a metal casting, and metal castings by this process.

  • Patent number: 6387983
Abstract: This invention relates to foundry mixes and their use in preparing foundry shapes (molds and cores) and in casting metals. The foundry mixes comprise a foundry aggregate and an organic foundry binder that contains an organic polyisocyanate and an aliphatic mercaptan. The binder systems react to form thiocarbamate polymers when mixed with sand. Preferably, a tertiary amine curing catalyst is used to promote the reaction of the organic polyisocyanate and aliphatic mercaptan.

  • Patent number: 6288139
Abstract: This invention relates to polyurethane-forming foundry binder systems comprising a phenolic resin component and a polyisocyanate component, where the polyisocyanate component contains an ortho ester. The invention also relates to foundry mixes prepared from the binder and an aggregate, as well as foundry shapes prepared by the no-bake and cold-box processes. The foundry shapes are used to make metal castings.

  • Patent number: 5416134
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an aqueous emulsion acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive composition that excels in high performance applications. The inventive adhesive composition comprises in water:(I) a polymer system wherein the system is:(A) (a) a copolymer of between about 95 wt-% and 99.9 wt-% of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and between about 0.1 wt-% and 5 wt-% N-alkyl substituted or unsubstituted amide of (meth)acrylic acid, and(b) a homopolymer or copolymer of between about 0 wt-% and 99.8 wt-% of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and about 0.2 wt-% and 100 wt-% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; or(B) (a) a copolymer of between about 90 wt-% and 99.8 wt-% of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and about 0.2 wt-% and 10 wt-% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; and(b) a homopolymer or copolymer of between about 0 wt-% and 99.1 wt-% of a C.sub.4 -C.sub.18 alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and between about 0.
