Abstract: A system and method of reproducing an audio signal produced by an audio system which includes an earphone is described. The method including the steps of: receiving an audio signal; estimating short-term characteristics of the acoustic exposure of a listener; recording the short-term characteristics; controlling the audio signal and; outputting the controlled audio signal for reproduction. The system or method of the invention may be applied to any sound reproduction system that reproduces sounds by way of an earphone such as telephone headsets or handsets, personal music players, mobile telephones, and two way radios.

Abstract: A system and method that reduces the perceptual effect resulting from ear occlusion include an electro-acoustic feedback network that produces phase canceling sounds in the ear, where a receiver and a microphone are located. A control mechanism controls the response of the feedback network to minimize distortion in the ear while maintaining a desired frequency response for external signals. Devices producing the external signal include hearing aids, personal sound devices, in ear monitors, communications headsets and hearing protectors. The integration of the above with these devices improves a user's perception of their own voice.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling potentially harmful signals in a signal arranged to convey speech is described. The method includes the steps of establishing characteristics of the signal when it is conveying speech; monitoring the signal; and controlling the signal relative to the established characteristics.
