    Abstract: Disclosed are blue, diol anthraquinone blue colorant compounds having excellent thermal stability and which can be reacted into or copolymerized with polyester thus providing a blue-colored polyesters useful for manufacturing a variety of shaped articles such as photographic film base, particularly roentgenographic (X-ray) film. Also disclosed are blue anthraquinone colorant compounds which contain two ethylenically-unsaturated (vinyl), photopolymerizable radicals which may be derived from the aforesaid diol anthraquinone compounds. The anthraquinone colorant compounds containing two ethylenically-unsaturated may be reacted into or copolymerized (or cured) with ethylenically-unsaturated monomers to produce colored vinyl polymers.

    Abstract: Disclosed are thermally-stable, anthraquinone colorant compounds (dyes) which contain one or more vinyl groups which render the compounds copolymerizable with reactive vinyl monomers to produce colored, polymeric compositions such as acrylate and methacrylate polymeric materials. The compounds possess good fastness (stability) to ultraviolet (UV) light, good solubility in vinyl monomers, good color strength and excellent thermal stability.     Abstract: A pigment composition includes a crystalline thermoplastic polyester resin having residues of at least one dicarboxylic acid and a near-infrared fluorescing compound having a fluorescence between about 650 nm to about 2500 nm associated with the crystalline thermoplastic polyester, wherein the polyester has an intrinsic viscosity (IV) of less than about 0.37. A preferred polyester is polybutylene terephthalate. Another aspect is a method for providing a detectable or identifiable marking that is invisible to the unaided eye on a surface of a substrate is also provided. The method includes the steps of applying to the surface a marking composition comprising a suitably compatible marking fluid containing the fluorescent pigment composition. The near infrared fluorescing pigment composition is useful in letterpress, flexographic and gravure printing applications.

    Abstract: A digital recording medium, such as a compact disc, having a substrate, a reflective layer and a protective layer includes a near infrared fluorophore in one of the layers. The near infrared fluorophore can be incorporated into the CD by coating, admixing, blending or copolymerization and in an amount to impart a detectable fluorescence from the fluorophore when exposed to electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength ranging from about 670 nanometers (nm) to about 1100 nm. A method of marking a CD with an invisible marking and an apparatus for detecting the fluorophore is further provided.

    Abstract: An apparatus for detecting an invisible, near infrared fluorescing mark disposed on a background comprises: includes an excitation source for exciting the mark, having sufficient power to excite the mark and provide a fluorescent signal the mark from a; a signal detector for detecting the fluorescent signal from the mark; a and power modulator means for varying the power if the excitation source between zero and the maximum power level to produce a decodable fluorescent signal from the mark disposed on the background. A process for decoding an invisible mark having a near infrared fluorescing material includes the steps of: providing at least one invisible, near infrared fluorescing mark disposed on at least one portion of a background; exciting the mark with a laser having a maximum power level sufficient to provide a fluorescent signal from the mark; detecting the fluorescent signal and concurrently varying the power of the laser between zero and its maximum power, to obtain a decodable fluorescent signal.
