Patent number: 10086125Abstract: This disclosure relates to detecting fluid in medical tubing. In certain aspects, a method is performed by a data processing apparatus. The method includes controlling repetitive activation of the ultrasonic transmitter. The method also includes receiving a signal from the ultrasonic receiver during an activation of the ultrasonic transmitter. The method also includes determining that fluid is absent or present in a portion of the medical fluid tube based on a comparison between the signal and a threshold value.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2017Date of Patent: October 2, 2018Assignee: Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Nigel Wright, Samuel Ernest Magargi, III, Jeremy Thomas Harbaugh, Michael John Zang, Regis Joseph Winniewicz, Jr., Joseph Stephen Beri, Douglas Mark Zatezalo, Tom Monahan, Ronald Robert Fox

Patent number: 9433721Abstract: This disclosure relates to vial spiking assemblies and related methods. In certain aspects, the vial spiking assemblies include a vial adapter having a base, a spike extending from a central region of the base, and a sidewall extending from the base and surrounding the spike. The base and the sidewalls partially, define a cavity that is configured to receive at least a portion of the vial. The assemblies also include a spike cover that is removably attached to the spike and that includes a material configured to indicate when the material is contacted with liquid.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2013Date of Patent: September 6, 2016Assignee: Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Nigel Wright, Michael John Zang, Tom Monahan, John A. Barron, Douglas Mark Zatezalo

Patent number: 9333286Abstract: This disclosure relates to medical tubing installation detection. In certain aspects, a method is performed by a data processing apparatus. The method includes detecting that a tube is incorrectly installed on a drug delivery device by providing an instruction for a motor of the drug delivery device to pump a drug and receiving, after a period of time has passed since providing the instruction for the motor of the drug delivery device to pump the drug, a signal from a fluid detector connected to the tube, the signal indicating an absence of fluid in the tube.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2011Date of Patent: May 10, 2016Assignee: Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Nigel Wright, Samuel Ernest Magargi, III, Jeremy Thomas Harbaugh, Michael John Zang, Regis Joseph Winniewicz, Jr., Joseph Stephen Beri, Douglas Mark Zatezalo, Tom Monahan, Ronald Robert Fox

Patent number: 9144646Abstract: In some aspects, a vial spiking device includes a base, a spike extending from the base, and a side wall extending from the base and substantially surrounding the spike. The base and the side wall partially define a recess to receive a portion of a vial. Resilient fingers extend inwardly from the side wall into the recess. The fingers are spaced circumferentially around the side wall and are configured so that as the vial is inserted into the recess, the fingers deflect toward the side wall and allow the portion of the vial to move beyond the fingers. The fingers rebound into the recess after the portion of the vial has moved beyond the fingers. The side wall forces the portion of the vial away from the base and into contact with the fingers after the fingers have rebounded into the recess.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2013Date of Patent: September 29, 2015Assignee: Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc.Inventors: John A. Barron, III, Chad Unger, Douglas Mark Zatezalo, Michael John Zang
