Patent number: 10962533Abstract: Provided herein are methods, systems, and devices for detecting and/or identifying one or more specific microorganisms in a culture sample. Indicator particles, such as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active nanoparticles, each having associated therewith one or more specific binding members having an affinity for the one or more microorganisms of interest, can form a complex with specific microorganisms in the culture sample. Further, agitating magnetic capture particles also having associated therewith one or more specific binding members having an affinity for the one or more microorganisms of interest can be used to capture the microorganism-indicator particle complex and concentrate the complex in a localized area of an assay vessel for subsequent detection and identification. The complex can be dispersed, pelleted, and redispersed so that the culture sample can be retested a number of times during incubation so as to allow for real-time monitoring of the culture sample.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 2017Date of Patent: March 30, 2021Assignee: BECTON, DICKINSON AND COMPANYInventors: Kristin Weidemaier, Erin Gooch Carruthers, Adam C. Curry, Melody M. H. Kuroda, Ammon David Lentz, Michael Justin Lizzi, Eric A. Fallows, Donald E. Gorelick, Jack Kessler, Spencer Lovette, Jeffrey S. Ojala, Mark A. Talmer

Patent number: 10654666Abstract: A separating system (1) comprises a housing (60) sized to receive a stack of articles having at least one first article (12) stacked on top of a second article (10). The system (1) also includes a lifter (20) movable into a contact position adjacent a surface (13) on the at least one first article (12). The lifter (20) is adapted to apply a lifting force to the surface (13) to lift at least a portion of the first article (12) above the contact position. An extractor (40) moves the second article (10) away from the stack of articles after the at least one first article (12) has been lifted above the contact position by the lifter (20). The housing (60) prevents the at least one first article (12) from moving with the second article (10) when the second article (10) is moved by the extractor (40) and guides the stack of articles downward after the second article (10) is moved away.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2016Date of Patent: May 19, 2020Assignee: BD KIESTRA B. V.Inventors: Michael Justin Lizzi, Lukas Blaauw, Timothy Roy Hansen, Freerk H. Van Der Werff, Jurjen Sinnema, Jordan Brown, James Glen Burmaster, Rui Goncalves, Milenko Lukic, Nino Orucevic, Martin John Juritsch

Publication number: 20170191054Abstract: A method is provided for extracting and purifying components of biological samples with a two-step process for elution and neutralization of the components from the sample. The separate elution and neutralization steps use adjustment of the buffer pH to improve extraction and purification of the desired components.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2017Publication date: July 6, 2017Applicant: Becton, Dickinson and CompanyInventors: Matthew P. Collis, Michael Justin Lizzi
