Publication number: 20220375366Abstract: A segmented alphanumeric includes a display panel, at least one linearly actuated platform, and display elements. Each display element passes through an orifice in the display panel to generate protruded and segmented alphanumeric characters in combination with other extended display elements. A microactuator array is displaceable by the linearly actuated platform and includes electromagnets and rotors. Each rotor is mounted for rotation in at least one direction between an active state and an inactive state by at least one associated electromagnet. Each display element is displaced through the orifice by actuation of the linearly actuated platform via a respective rotor when the respective rotor is rotated into its active state and to evade displacement by the rotor when the rotor is rotated into its inactive state.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 1, 2020Publication date: November 24, 2022Applicant: President and Fellows of Harvard CollegeInventors: Michael Karpelson, Rut Maria Pena Velasco, Robert J. Publication number: 20220361974Abstract: A multi-layer, super-planar laminate structure can be formed from distinctly patterned layers. The layers in the structure can include at least one rigid layer and at least one flexible layer; the rigid layer includes a plurality of rigid segments, and the flexible layer can extend between the rigid segments to serve as a joint. The layers are then stacked and bonded at selected locations to form a laminate structure with inter-layer bonds, and the laminate structure is flexed at the flexible layer between rigid segments to produce an expanded three-dimensional structure, wherein the layers are joined at the selected bonding locations and separated at other locations. A layer with electrical wiring can be included in the structure for delivering electric current to devices on or in the laminate structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2022Publication date: November 17, 2022Applicant: President and Fellows of Harvard CollegeInventors: Joshua B. Gafford, Samuel B. Kesner, Conor J. Walsh, Michael Karpelson, Robert J. Wood, Zivthan Dubrovsky, Benjamin I. Goldberg, Kathleen O'Donnell, Michael J. Smith

Patent number: 11465175Abstract: A haptic actuator includes mechanical links defining a first J-trajectory and mechanical links defining a second J-trajectory as well as a motor coupled to the mechanical links so as to synchronously accelerate a first mass over the first J-trajectory and a second mass over the second J-trajectory. During a first time interval, reactive forces of the first mass accelerating substantially balance reactive forces of the second mass accelerating and during a second time interval reactive forces of the first mass accelerating do not substantially balance reactive forces of the second mass accelerating. This un-balanced condition results in a tap signal being produced.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2020Date of Patent: October 11, 2022Assignee: Vibrant Composites Inc.Inventors: Pratheev Sabaratnam Sreetharan, Andrew Baisch, Michael Karpelson
