  • Patent number: 8047083
Abstract: A flexible sensor is disposed in a power tool. The flexible sensor has an electrical resistance that varies based on a radius of curvature of the flexible sensor. A trigger partially disposed in the power tool, operates to apply a bending force at an engagement point on the flexible sensor to bend the flexible sensor and alter the radius of curvature. A controller outputs an electrical signal to the power tool based on the electrical resistance to control a function of the power tool.

  • Publication number: 20100079097
Abstract: A method for controlling the operation of a motor utilizing a generic motor control module. The method includes sampling at least one motor operating criterion during operation of the motor and executing a generic control algorithm at a predetermined periodic interval. Execution of the algorithm provides a firing angle, duty cycle, or other suitable control function solution for an electronic valve for each periodic interval, thereby controlling the behavior of the motor. Additionally, the method includes firing the electronic valve at the calculated timing during each periodic interval such that the motor functions in accordance with desired motor operational parameters.

  • Publication number: 20100079098
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a plurality of different motors used in a corresponding plurality of power tool applications requiring different operational characteristics. In one implementation a method involves the use of a single universal control module to store a generic, non-application-specific control algorithm. The generic, non-application-specific control algorithm has at least one programmable constant. The programmable constant is selected to transform the generic, non-application-specific control algorithm into an application-specific control algorithm. The programmable constant represents a function parameter relating to a specific functionality of a specific, selected motor used in a specific, selected motor application to implement a phase control over the specific, selected motor.

  • Patent number: 6913087
Abstract: A system and method for unidirectionally or bi-directionally communicating information and data to and from an electronic module housed within a cordless power tool, over power terminals of the cordless power tool, while a battery pack of the tool is removed from the tool. A data transfer device is connected to at least one power terminal of the tool in place of the battery pack. The power terminal is also used for electrically connecting the battery pack to the tool during normal operation of the tool. A voltage supplied by the data transfer device to the tool is sequentially varied between a first level and a second level, in accordance with a predetermined communications protocol, to transmit data from electronic module of the tool to the data transfer device. A voltage signal applied to the electronic module of the tool is sequentially shifted between a first voltage and a second voltage to transmit data from the data transfer device to the tool.
