  • Patent number: 4478288
Abstract: An assembly including a tubing safety valve and annulus safety valve mounted within nipples incorporated within an inner conduit is disclosed for use in conjunction with the injection of material, such as gas, through the center of the inner conduit. The injected material can be used to stimulate production of fluids from the formation through the annulus between the inner conduit and an outer concentric conduit. This outer concentric conduit normally comprises an existing producting tubing string having existing safety valve nipple and external control fluid lines. Nipples incorporated within the inner conduit provide means for sealing the annulus between the inner and the outer conduit and for positioning the inner conduit relative to the outer conduit to provide communication between the tubing safety valve and the annulus safety valve and the external existing source of control fluid pressure.

  • Patent number: 4460040
Abstract: An equalizing annulus valve for use in controlling flow in the annulus between two tubular conduits in a subterranean oil or gas well has a control pressure responsive main valve piston and a booster piston for closing radial flow ports. The booster piston is spring loaded relative to the main piston and excess annulus pressure below the valve acts on the booster piston rather than on the main piston. The main piston can be partially opened before abutting the booster piston to permit pressure below the valve to meter through an equalizing port in the main piston and through the main flow ports. When the pressure is equalized, the main piston and booster piston can be shifted to a fully open position. An auxiliary piston responsive to an increase in annulus pressure can also be used to shift the main piston.

  • Patent number: 4446922
Abstract: A ball type safety valve mounted in a movable cage for automatically closing a subterranean well conduit is disclosed. The ball has a central flow passage which can be aligned with the tubing to permit production and can be automatically rotated to block the tubing. The ball is moved from its closed to its open position by an increase in control fluid pressure, preferably in an external control fluid line extending to the surface of the well. An increase in control fluid pressure causes the cage to move axially and rotation is imparted by the offset camming means attached to a stationary base member. The base member is adjustable relative to the valve housing and to the cage to insure that the valve is fully open and fully closed at opposite extremes of the travel of the cage and ball assembly.

  • Patent number: 4433725
Abstract: A spacing apparatus for tubing conduit in a subterranean well, normally for use with an electric component with a longitudinally extending external electrical cable, permits irrotational adjustment of the length of the tubing conduit. The spacing apparatus comprises telescoping members which are keyed to prevent rotation therebetween. A threaded member, longitudinally fixed relative to one longitudinal member, normally engages threads extending substantially along the entire length of the other telescoping member. Movement of a retaining sleeve permits disengagement of the threaded segments which ratchet along the threads during telescoping movement. The length of the conduit can thus be irrotationally adjusted to remove slack from the electrical cable.

  • Patent number: 4432417
Abstract: A hanger and valve assembly which can be employed as a safety valve assembly to close both the production tubing and the tubing-casing annulus in a subterranean well is disclosed. The assembly includes a hydraulically activated, mechanically locked hanger which has slip anchoring members engaging the casing or, exterior conduit for preventing movement in both longitudinal directions. The hanger also has annular packing elements to seal the tubing-casing annulus. An annulus safety valve member employing a longitudinally recessed resilient seal member can be mounted in a landing nipple mounted in the hanger. By recessing the seal it is protected from the turbulent flow through the valve. A second shuttle located in the landing nipple is employed in conjunction with the first annulus safety valve to permit flow in one direction while metering flow in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 4427064
Abstract: No-blow tool for braking rapid upward movement of a pulling tool and the device being retrieved caused by sudden upward fluid flow. The no-blow tool is assembled as part of a wire line tool assembly below jars and above the pulling tool. The no-blow tool includes three telescoping members, the lowest of which is secured to the pulling tool. Rapid upward movement of the pulling tool and the lowest telescoping member relative to the intermediate telescoping member cams serated slips radially outwardly to grip a well conduit, thereby braking the upward movement. A shearable connection between the upper and intermediate telescoping members permits jarring forces to be transmitted downwardly through the tool, without interference from the slip system.

  • Patent number: 4406325
Abstract: A no-go apparatus for positioning a tool within a landing nipple in a tubing string in a subterranean well includes a mandrel axially movable within the tubing string having selectively radially expandable latches for engaging a specially shaped annular groove formed on the inside cylindrical surface of the landing nipple, thereby preventing downward movement of the latches and mandrel past the groove. The latches are configured to prevent their engagement by any groove or projections in the tubing string other than the correspondingly shaped groove.

  • Patent number: 4281858
Abstract: This invention relates to a selectively telescopable joint carryable in a tubular conduit having upper and lower conduit members which are extendable within a subterranean oil or gas well. The apparatus comprises an outer cylindrical housing with an inner cylindrical body carried therein. One of the housing and the body is connectable to the upper member while the other of the housing and the body is connectable to the lower member. Seal means are carried on one of the housing and the body and are slidable along the other of same to prevent fluid communication during telescopic motion. Engagement profiles are defined on each of the housing and the body. A bridging member is extendable within the joint and between the housing and the body. Engaging means, such as a collet, are carried on the bridging member and are extendably and selectively secured within the profiles whereby the housing and the body are in relative locked position.
