    Abstract: To protect against accidental needle prick a catheter and insertion device are provided wherein the needle is retractable within the device after insertion of the catheter. The device includes a hollow barrel or tube of semi-rigid plastic material into which the needle can be retracted after use. The barrel includes a resealable closure at the insertion that opens to allow passage of the needle and catheter and closes to reseal the barrel when the needle is retracted. A cap is provided that covers the barrel to further seal the device after use.

The cover includes legs that extend into the container to prevent the tableted material from floating upward and blocking the inlet and outlet to the container. The container is secured in the drain line by conduits on either end.

The adapter includes a cannula for piercing the pad and a valve that is opened by the attachment of a syringe. In a second embodiment the Y connector itself contains the valve in lieu of the puncture pad. In a final embodiment the valve is contained within a universal luer connector adapter.

    Abstract: A blood collection device for use with vacuum sample tube is provided having a retractable carrier for a double cannula. A sliding tab is mounted to the carrier by an outwardly biased flexible member and extends through a longitudinal slot in the barrel. Near either end of the slot V notches are provided in the internal wall of the barrel to engage locking hubs on the sliding tab to releasably lock the carrier in either the exposed or retracted position. A first cap is provided to cover the original open end and a second cap is provided to cover the end left open after retraction of the double cannula into the barrel.

    Abstract: An adapter for a medicinal vial is provided which includes a conical spike on one end for insertion through the rubber puncture pad in the lid of a medicinal vial. The end opposite the spike is provided with a standard male luer connection and pre-slit rubber cover. The male luer connector of a syringe may be easily passed through the slit to withdraw liquid from the vial by action of the piston. The rubber cover keeps the end of the adapter sealed. In one embodiment the adapter includes a valve in the upper portion to seal the end which opens in response to the attachment of a syringe.

A removable safety cap is provided to cover the upper end of the plunger and the barrel to prevent accidental depression of the plunger and engagement of the hub with the carrier before use. The cap is placed over the open end of the barrel after use to provide a closed container. The shaft is broken off at above the hub leaving the hub and carrier in the barrel.
