  • Publication number: 20080221634
Abstract: A cardiac assist device senses conditions of a heart and controls the generation of various electrical stimuli in response to sense conditions of the heart. The cardiac assist device generates a electrical pulse so as to defibrillate a fibrillated heart when the cardiac assist device determines from the sensed conditions a state of fibrillation. The cardiac assist device generates a chaos control electrical signal so as to bring a pre-fibrillated heart condition back into a normal beating condition when the cardiac assist device determines from the sensed conditions a pre-state of fibrillation. Lastly, the cardiac assist device generates an electrical enhancement signal that causes a threshold of pacing cells in the heart to be exceeded in response to a subthreshold stimulus when the cardiac assist device determines from the sensed conditions a subthreshold pacing signal.

  • Publication number: 20080179521
Abstract: A coherent radiation imaging system that produces digital images with a reduced amount of speckle. Radiation from a long coherence length source is used to form an image of a sample. The output coherent wave is temporally divided into a plurality of wavelets. The spatial phase of each wavelet is then modulated a known and different amount. Each phase modulated wavelet illuminates the sample and is perturbed by its interaction with the sample. A spatial phase map of each perturbed wavelet is then created and converted to a sample image with an image reconstruction program. The plurality of sample images thus formed is statistically averaged to form a final averaged image. The high frequency speckle that is not optically resolvable tends to average to zero with continual statistical averaging, leaving only the optically resolvable lower frequency phase information.

  • Patent number: 6988001
Abstract: A hermetic component housing for use with a photonic catheter connected to a photonic pacemaker or other medical system designed for compatibility with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures. The hermetic housing includes a housing body having a proximal end and a distal end. The body is formed with a hermetically sealed interior for carrying one or more electrical and/or optical components therein. The proximal end of the body is adapted to mount to a distal end of a photonic catheter carrying a fiber optic element or bundle. A hermetic terminal is provided to allow the fiber optic element or bundle to communicate with the body interior. The body can be adapted to mount (or function as) one or more electrodes designed for delivering or sensing electrical signals to body tissue, or it may be adapted to mount no electrodes. The component housing may be implemented by itself at the distal end of the photonic catheter, or it may be used in conjunction with other housings of like or different construction.

  • Patent number: 6949929
Abstract: A voltage compensation unit reduces the effects of induced voltages upon a device having a single wire line. The single wire line has balanced characteristic impedance. The voltage compensation unit includes a tunable compensation circuit connected to the wire line. The tunable compensation circuit applies supplemental impedance to the wire line. The supplemental impedance causes the characteristic impedance of the wire line to become unbalanced, thereby reducing the effects of induced voltages caused by changing magnetic fields.
