  • Publication number: 20020156772
Abstract: A technique is provided for creating metadata for fast search of XML documents stored as column data. Data is stored in a data store connected to a computer. A main table is created having a column for storing a document, wherein the document has one or more elements or attributes. One or more side tables are created, wherein each side table stores one or more elements or attributes. Then, the side tables are used to locate data in the main table with scalable indexing mechanisms to facilitate search.

  • Patent number: 6467988
Abstract: A flanged joint connection for connecting together by a bolted connection a pair of casing shells having connecting flanges. The connection reduces bearing stress concentrations adjacent fillets provided at the junction of the flange and the casing shell surface. A rectilinear edge portion is provided on a bolt head or a spacer, or both, to avoid point contact of the bolt head or spacer and the flange face or fillet. The rectilinear edge portion includes a convexly-curved surface that faces the fillet. The incidence of cracks between a bolt hole and the fillet, as well as the incidence of circumferential cracks between adjacent bolt holes is significantly reduced.

  • Publication number: 20020113784
Abstract: A portable computer with a touch sensitive screen includes computer aided design (CAD) software that complements CAD software on a main computer. Drawings from the main computer can be downloaded onto the portable computer, modified remotely, and then uploaded back to the main computer to reflect the drawing changes. In one embodiment, the device records data only when the user lifts a stylus from a touch sensitive screen, allowing the device to be used in physically unstable environments.

  • Publication number: 20020100203
Abstract: A feature or provision specifically to aid in aligning the vertical and horizontal reticules with respect to the vertical and horizontal axes of the bore during the installation of a telescopic sight (scope) on a firearm which includes at least one mounting boss for securing the telescopic sight. This feature also provides a means of verification that the installed position has not changed during use, and a reference which will allow the scope to be returned to its original calibrated position should it need to be temporarily removed from its mount. This feature is an indexing system. It consists of markings on the scope body, which, when aligned with corresponding marks on the mounting hardware provide a quick, accurate, inexpensive, simple, and intuitive method of properly aligning the scope's vertical and horizontal axes with those of the firearm's bore during installation; and verification of that alignment thereafter without the use of accessory apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6374478
Abstract: A system for manufacturing a straight tube Coriolis Flowmeter. The system of this invention provides a process for connecting a flow tube assembly including a balance bar and a flow tube to at least two points inside a casing. The process provides an inexpensive way to use localized heat to affix the flow tube assembly to the two points. The use of localized heat reduces damage caused by expansion of components caused by heat as well reduces damage to electrical components in the casing.

  • Patent number: 6356896
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for data visualization of queries over joins. One or more commands are executed in a computer to perform a database operation on a relational database stored on a data store connected to the computer. Initially, a selection of a join indicator associated with a row of a table in the relational database is received. It is determined whether to perform a table level join operation or a row level join operation. The determined join operation is performed.

  • Patent number: 5876671
Abstract: A standard laboratory module for automatically producing a solution of cominants from a soil sample. A sonication tip agitates a solution containing the soil sample in a beaker while a stepper motor rotates the sample. An aspirator tube, connected to a vacuum, draws the upper layer of solution from the beaker through a filter and into another beaker. This beaker can thereafter be removed for analysis of the solution. The standard laboratory module encloses an embedded controller providing process control, status feedback information and maintenance procedures for the equipment and operations within the standard laboratory module.

  • Patent number: 5870737
Abstract: A computer system responds to a user query by providing a screen which displays a response that is influenced by prior expressed preferences of the user. The computer system includes a knowledge base of data pertaining to one or more subjects. The system monitors a user's entries and records priority information regarding data preferences of the user. Upon receiving a user's query regarding a selected subject in the knowledge base, the system selects a template for responding to the user's query. The template contains both fixed and variable fields and the system inserts replacement data in the variable fields. The replacement data is selected in accord with recorded priority information relating to the selected subject. The priority information enables a sorting of the replacement data so as to provide data to the user which is inferentially related to the user's prior entry history.

  • Patent number: 5799298
Abstract: A system and method for allowing communication of a large number of parameters from a computer user to an application program with a relatively small amount of interaction. The system uses a plurality of graphical metaphors to represent a collection of known personality or collective knowledge representations to extract a computer user's preferences. A computer user expresses how much likeness exists between themselves and a set of metaphoric graphical objects which is translated into an intermediary format which enables the computer to provide a higher quality of pattern matching and differentiation.

  • Patent number: 5752022
Abstract: A server-based application intercepts an initial request for access to documents which may contain imbedded references to linked information. A request is made from the server to the actual location of the requested document as it is found on a network (e.g. WORLD-WIDE WEB, INTERNET, etc.). The document is retrieved into the server and parsed to discover all imbedded addresses contained therein. The server then replaces each imbedded address with its own address plus the original imbedded address such that all future references to the imbedded information will be supplied by the server. Additional linking information, functions and/or environment escape information may then be prepended and/or postpended to the requested document independently through the server.

  • Patent number: 5683062
Abstract: Insect debris is removed from or prevented from adhering to insect impingement areas of an aircraft, particularly on an inlet cowl of an engine, by heating the area to 180.degree.-500.degree. C. An apparatus comprising a means to bring hot air from the aircraft engine to a plenum contiguous to the insect impingement area provides for the heating of the insect impingement areas to the required temperatures. The plenum can include at least one tube with a plurality of holes contained in a cavity within the inlet cowl. • Patent number: 5640608
Abstract: A tag server system provides unique tag values to many client systems. The tag server system comprises a processor that generates an inventory of unique tag values, such values being generated by monotonically increasing a value within the tag body field. A memory is provided for storing the inventory of unique tag values. A nonvolatile memory is controlled by the processor and stores a highest unique tag value generated by the processor. The processor implements a tag value recovery procedure and is responsive to a data loss failure mode in the tag server system to cause a readout of the highest unique tag value from the non-volatile memory. The processor is responsive to that highest unique tag value to commence generation of new unique tag values monotonically from that value and expends no effort to regenerate lost unique tag values that are less than the highest unique tag value derived from the non-volatile memory.
