  • Publication number: 20060022890
Abstract: A smart antenna includes a ground plane, an active antenna element adjacent the ground plane, and passive antenna elements adjacent the ground plane. The passive antenna elements have different sizes for defining different resonant frequencies for increasing a bandwidth of the smart antenna. Dielectric layers having different dielectric constants may also be used for coating the passive antenna elements for defining different resonant frequencies. Impedance elements are connected to the ground plane and are selectively connectable to the passive antenna elements for antenna beam steering.

  • Publication number: 20060003622
Abstract: A bird guard comprising pivotally attached covers for conductors emanating from an insulator. The insulator is covered while maintaining the integrity of the insulator's dielectric properties. Prevention of contact with the conductor is accomplished by covering a portion of the conductor emanating in a first direction from an insulative support. Inadvertent exposure of the conductor emanating in the first direction is then prevented. A portion of the conductor proximate to the insulative support is covered.

  • Publication number: 20050285784
Abstract: A satellite communication subscriber device includes a smart antenna for generating antenna beams for receiving signals from at least one satellite, and a receiver. The receiver includes a quality metric module for calculating a quality metric on the signals received by each antenna beam. A beam selector is coupled to the smart antenna for selecting the antenna beams. An antenna steering algorithm module runs an antenna steering algorithm for operating the beam selector for scanning the antenna beams, receiving the calculated quality metrics from the receiver for each scanned antenna beam, and comparing the calculated quality metrics. The algorithm selects one of the scanned antenna beams based upon the comparing for continuing to receive signals from the at least one satellite.

  • Publication number: 20050288443
Abstract: Resins comprising a relatively high-density, low-molecular-weight polyethylene component and a relatively low-density, high-molecular-weight ethylene copolymer component and methods of making the resins are disclosed. The rheological polydispersity of the high-density component exceeds that of either the resin or the low-density component. The resins are valuable for making films, sheets, coatings, pipes, fibers, and molded articles having a favorable balance of good stiffness and excellent environmental stress crack resistance.

  • Publication number: 20050266149
Abstract: Some embodiments of the present invention provide an apparatus and method in which material is deposited upon a surface from an elongated beam having an aperture defined therein through which the material is moved by passive adsorption. The elongated beam can be substantially planar along substantially its entire length, can be oriented at an acute angle with respect to the surface during deposition processes, and can have a length no greater than about 2 mm. In some embodiments, the aperture can be elongated, can extend from a material reservoir to a location short of the terminal end of the elongated beam or through the terminal end of the elongated beam, and can have a portion extending through the thickness of the elongated beam.

  • Publication number: 20050259005
Abstract: A matrix-fed circular array system includes a plurality of antennas, a plurality of azimuth matrices in communication with the antennas, and a plurality of elevation matrices in communication with the azimuth matrices. The array system forms M×N beams, where M is the number of azimuth beams, and N is the number of elevation beams. In another embodiment, through the use of a Shelton-Butler or Butler matrix which includes a plurality of hybrids, the system outputs omni-directional pancake-shaped radiation patterns that are isolated from each other when a communication signal is input into the system. In yet another embodiment, the system uses a beam forming network including two Shelton-Butler matrices. A first one of the Shelton-Butler matrices creates omni-directional pancake beams that are isolated from each other, and a second Shelton-Butler matrix creates multiple directive beams in an azimuth plane.

  • Publication number: 20050233154
Abstract: Self-metallizing polyimide films are created by doping polyamic acid solutions with metallic ions and solubilizing agents. Upon creating a film, the film is exposed to coherent light for a specific time and then cured. The resulting film has been found to have a metallic surface layer and a metallic subsurface layer (interlayer). The layer separating the metallic layer has a uniform dispersion of small metal particulates within the polymer. The layer below the interlayer has larger metal particulates uniformly distributed within the polymer. By varying the intensity or time of exposure to the coherent light, three-dimensional control of metal formation within the film is provided.

  • Publication number: 20050202859
Abstract: A method and apparatus for utilizing a switched beam directional antenna in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is disclosed. A wireless communication system includes a serving cell, a neighbor cell and a WTRU. The WTRU is configured to generate and steer a directional beam in a plurality of directions. Once the WTRU registers with the wireless communication system, the WTRU receives messages transmitted by the serving cell. The WTRU measures signal quality of messages received in each of a plurality of predetermined directions while steering the directional beam antenna. The WTRU selects a particular one of the directions having the best signal quality. As the WTRU constantly moves, the WTRU monitors signal quality in the selected direction, and switches to another direction when the signal quality in a current direction drops below a predetermined threshold.

  • Publication number: 20050179607
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically selecting antennas for transmission and/or reception. The apparatus may be an antenna system, a base station, a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), and/or an integrated circuit (IC). A subset of a plurality of antennas available for use is determined at any given moment in time. The antennas may be comprised by a Shelton-Butler matrix fed circular array including a plurality of selectable mode ports. One or more characteristics, (e.g., antenna cross-correlation, multipath), of antenna signals received via the antennas/mode ports are analyzed on a continual basis, and the number of available antennas/mode ports needed for transmission and/or reception is determined. At least one of the available antennas/mode ports associated with at least one received antenna signal having a better characteristic than the other received antenna signals is selected. The at least one selected antenna/mode port is then used for transmission and/or reception.

  • Publication number: 20050174298
Abstract: An antenna assembly includes at least two active or main radiating omni-directional antenna elements arranged with at least one beam control or passive antenna element used as a reflector. The beam control antenna element(s) may have multiple reactance elements that can electrically terminate it to adjust the input or output beam pattern(s) produced by the combination of the active antenna elements and the beam control antenna element(s). More specifically, the beam control antenna element(s) may be coupled to different terminating reactances to change beam characteristics, such as the directivity and angular beamwidth. Processing may be employed to select which terminating reactance to use. Consequently, the radiator pattern of the antenna can be more easily directed towards a specific target receiver/transmitter, reduce signal-to-noise interference levels, and/or increase gain.

  • Publication number: 20050150156
Abstract: This invention is a method of purifying fuels containing organosulfur impurities. The fuel is oxidized with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of an oxidation catalyst to form a sulfone product, followed by extraction of the sulfone product by solid-liquid or liquid-liquid extraction. The fuel is then contacted with a decomposition catalyst to remove the residual organic hydroperoxide from the fuel.

  • Publication number: 20050068231
Abstract: An antenna apparatus that can increase capacity in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The antenna operates in conjunction with a station and comprises a plurality of antenna elements, each coupled to a respective weight control component to provide a weight to the signal transmitted from (or received by) each element. The weight for each antenna element is adjusted to achieve optimum reception during, for example, an idle mode when a pilot signal is received. The antenna array creates a beam former for signals to be transmitted from the mobile station, and a directional receiving array to more optimally detect and receive signals transmitted from the base station. By directionally receiving and transmitting signals, multipath fading and intercell interference are greatly reduced. The weights are adjusted in a coarse and a fine mode.
