  • Patent number: 7073245
Abstract: A tool that seats and cuts multiple wires inserted into terminals of a multi-terminal jack includes a support housing for a linearly translatable, and removable carrier. The carrier fixedly retains one of a blade head and a jack, and slidably retains the other of the jack and the blade head, in such a manner that the jack is maintained in precision alignment with the blade head as the carrier is linearly translated within the support housing. A carrier translation control mechanism is coupled to the support housing in a manner that pushes and thereby linearly translates the carrier, so as to bring the blades of the translated blade head into precise stuffing and cutting engagement with the wires in the jack.

  • Patent number: 6070301
Abstract: Hammer rebound shock and hand and wrist fatigue associated with the use of a wire seating and/or cutting tool, such as an impact tool, is alleviated by a covering at least the butt end of the tool handle with an internally ribbed cushioning sleeve of elastically deformable material, such as soft rubber. Because of its ribbed configuration and soft rubber material, the cushioning sleeve readily absorbs the rebound of the hammer impact force that would otherwise be transmitted through the handle in the course of operation of the tool, and thereby provides shock protection for the craftsperson's hand.

  • Patent number: 5836069
Abstract: A wire-insertion and cutting head for a telephone wire installing impact tool has a plurality of unitary wire-insertion and cutting blade elements embedded in a single resilient cutting blade support block. Each wire-insertion and cutting blade element has both a wire-insertion blade and an increased thickness knife edge molded as a single continuous hardened steel element. The knife edge is located relative to the slot in the cutting blade to ensure that the knife edge will consistently and reliably effect a clean cut of a respective wire against the surface of the terminal receptacle, as the wire is urged into the terminal receptacle by the blade during operation of the impact tool.

  • Patent number: 5832603
Abstract: A telephone wire termination tool is configured to reliably seat and cut one or more wires in a reduced capacity wire termination receptacle, such as an AT&T/Lucent Technologies, RJ-45/M-series type jack. The tool comprises a pistol handle having a trigger which is operative to bring an actuator into engagement with a wire-insertion and cutting head carrier. The cutting head carrier retains a multiple wire-insertion and cutting head having a plurality of unitary wire-insertion and cutting blades, and is linearly translatable along an axis of the handle towards a nose end of the tool. The carrier cavity is sized such that the cutting head blades protrude from beyond the carrier, so that they may readily engage the reduced capacitry wire termination receptacle retained in a wire termination receptacle holder installed at the nose end of the tool handle.

  • Patent number: 5813109
Abstract: A wire-insertion and/or cutting tool comprises a handle having an axial bore, in which a wire-insertion and cutting blade assembly holder is installed. A wire-insertion and/or cutting blade assembly is inserted into the holder in a selected one of a plurality of blade assembly insertion orientations. The blade assembly includes a wire-insertion and/or cutting blade, that is configured to engage a wire to be inserted into a terminal block, and is operative to either seat, or to both seat and cut the wire in accordance with the selected blade assembly configuration and its insertion orientation. The blade assembly may include a rotatable cutting blade, and the holder configured to rotate the cutting blade and cut a wire engaged thereby for a first insertion orientation of the blade relative to the holder, but to prevent the cutting blade from rotating for a second insertion orientation of the blade assembly relative to the holder.

  • Patent number: 5794325
Abstract: A pistol-configured, electrically operated impact tool for seating and cutting a wire includes a D.C. motor whose output shaft has transversely extending, cam surface-engaging elements that engage a cam-configured impact element. As the output shaft is rotated by the operation of the D.C. motor, the cam surface-engaging elements are rotated to an angle where they begin to engage cam portions of the impact element. As a result of this engagement, the impact element is linearly translated away from the cutting tool holder and toward the electric motor. During this linear translation of the impact element away from the cutting tool holder, a bias spring is compressed, so as to increase the force stored in the spring. Eventually, the output shaft will be rotated to an angle brings the cam surface-engaging elements into alignment with a prescribed feature of the cam portions of the impact element.

  • Patent number: 5758403
Abstract: A wire-insertion and cutting head assembly for a telephone wire impact-type termination tool is selectively operable to effect either a non-cutting mode of operation, or a cutting mode of operation, by selectively positioning a rotatable cam pin-based arrangement. The cam-pin based arrangement is configured such that, for a first rotational pin orientation, during axial translation of the wire insertion blade into the bore of the blade receptacle, the axial bore of the shaft portion of the wire insertion blade passes by the cylindrical shaft portion of the cam pin, and a cam-shaped surface of the cam pin enters into and passes through a reduced width region of a cam-shaped opening of a scissor-shaped blade, which prevents rotation of the cutting blade.

  • Patent number: 5628105
Abstract: An impact tool for seating and cutting plural wires in a telephone wire termination block includes a movable cutter containing guide and shear elements having a spacial periodicity which differs slightly from that of terminals of the termination block. A force release mechanism in the tool handle includes a plunger translatable along the axis of the handle that engages a shaft for a stationary cutting head. The plunger passes through a bore of hammer which has a transverse bore sized to receive plural balls that are urged against and retain the plunger with the hammer. A main spring within the handle urges the hammer axially toward the shaft. The hammer passes through a ball-collar, which is axially translatable to remove retention between the hammer and the plunger, allowing the plunger to pass through the hammer bore, so that the hammer is rapidly axially translated by a main spring and strikes the plunger, imparting an impact force to the shaft.
