  • Publication number: 20150309997
Abstract: A mobile electronic device has a touch sensitive screen and an accelerometer. A translator is to translate a word or phrase that is in a first human language and that is entered via a first virtual keyboard displayed on the touch sensitive screen, into a second human language. A translator is to cause the touch sensitive screen to display the translated word or phrase and a second virtual keyboard having characters in the second human language, in response to the accelerometer detecting a change in the physical orientation of the device or movement of the device. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

  • Publication number: 20150230181
Abstract: Methods and systems for powering-off a wireless communication device from a linked device are provided. A device can transmit a wireless communication signal to a linked device to instruct the linked device to power-off. In this manner, the user need only turn off one device manually which results in all linked devices being powered off. This process can be initiated by a user through a device directly linked with the device to be powered-off or through a device that is indirectly connected, through one or more wireless communication networks, with the device to be powered-off. This process can also be automatically initiated by a device when a set of predetermined conditions exist. Once instructed to do so, a device can initiate a predetermined power-off process which can involve terminating any ongoing functions and turning off various subsystems. In accordance with the present invention, a user can initiate a power-off of all the devices on a wireless communication network through a single device.

  • Patent number: 9106447
Abstract: The present invention includes systems, apparatus and methods for providing message alerts to a user prior to that user communicating with a second party. The user may desire to communicate with a second party by sending a text-based message or by speaking to them through a communications device, such as a cellular phone. Prior to sending the message or speaking with the second party, the device can provide the user with message alerts, the option to review alert content, and/or to view the alert content itself. The message alerts and alert content can be notifications and/or previews of opened/unopened e-mail messages, voicemail messages, text messages, etc. Alert content can be located based on, for example, contact information of the person with whom the user desires to communicate, subject line data of a text-based message, main body data of a text based message, etc.

  • Patent number: 9042833
Abstract: A proximity detection module determines, using an infrared (IR) sensor of a user device, a distance between an object and the user device. The proximity detection module compares the distance to a distance threshold. If the distance is below the predefined distance threshold, the proximity detection module determines, using a capacitance sensor of the user device, a capacitance value associated with the object. The proximity detection module compares the capacitance value to a predefined presence threshold, and if the capacitance value meets or exceeds the predefined presence threshold, determines that the object comprises a body part of a user.

  • Patent number: 8977776
Abstract: Described herein are systems and methods for content streaming with bandwidth management. Partial content is generated from source content at a server and distributed to a streaming device, such as during periods when network bandwidth is available. This partial content is incomplete relative to the source content and is unusable. During presentation of the content, remaining content is streamed from the server and combined with the partial content to generate complete content suitable for presentation.

  • Patent number: 8855707
Abstract: A portable handheld electronic device contains a camera lens and accelerometer to allow a user to control voicemail and call features by swiping his finger across the camera lens and/or tapping the device. Therefore, the user can comfortably input commands into the device with a single hand and without needing to move the phone away from his ear to apply these inputs. In another embodiment, the camera lens can also be used to control navigation of the display screen or a displayed document of the device. For example, if a user wishes to shift a scrollbar for a page displayed on the screen downwards to view the bottom of the page, the user should move his finger over the camera lens in an analogous downward direction.

  • Patent number: 8775103
Abstract: A user device may include a transmission power manager to control a transmission power level of a wireless transceiver based on a location of a human body proximate the user device as detected by a proximity sensor. During initiation, the user device may record proximity data. The transmission power manager may perform a statistical analysis of the proximity data to generate refined proximity data that excludes or minimizes outlier data. The modified proximity data may then be compared to preexisting proximity data to determine whether a human body is within a threshold distance from the proximity sensor. When the modified proximity data is outside a threshold from the preexisting stored proximity data, then the modified proximity data may be compared to default proximity data to determine whether a human body is within a threshold distance from the proximity sensor.

  • Patent number: 8774951
Abstract: Systems and methods for enhanced media playback are disclosed. According to one aspect, during media playback, auxiliary (or secondary) media can be integrated with primary media. For example, an electronic device offering media playback can not only play back media item data but can also play back other auxiliary media data. In one implementation, presentation of a media group can involve not only presentation of media items of the media group but also presentation of auxiliary media. Another aspect pertains to how and when auxiliary media data is to be presented (e.g., played) by an electronic device. Another aspect pertains to updating or refreshing auxiliary media data. Still another aspect pertains to restricting presentation of primary media by an electronic device unless auxiliary data is also presented.

  • Patent number: 8706092
Abstract: Systems and methods for enabling users to listen to outgoing voice mail messages are provided. These systems and methods record an audio file corresponding to a voice message being left by a user during an outgoing telephone call to a recipient, link the audio file to contact information associated with the recipient, and provide the user access to the audio file through, for example, playback of the audio included in the file. These systems and methods may be implemented through individual communications devices, such as an iPhone, through a telephone communications provider, or a combination of the same.

  • Patent number: 8654993
Abstract: A method of operating a media player includes playing back audio media. During the step of playing back audio media, a maximum volume parameter is refined for the playing back of the media by the media player. The refining is based at least in part on the playing back of audio media during a time period prior to executing the maximum volume refining step. After a period of time, the maximum volume refining step is repeated. The refining is configured to prevent/minimize harm to hearing of the media player user based, for example, on the actual volume of media playback and time/duration profiles provided by occupational safety and/or other organizations.

  • Patent number: 8566407
Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are provided for enabling a user to control the content of text-based messages sent to or received from an administered device. In some embodiments, a message will be blocked (incoming or outgoing) if the message includes forbidden content. In other embodiments, the objectionable content is removed from the message prior to transmission or as part of the receiving process. The content of such a message is controlled by filtering the message based on defined criteria. The criteria may be defined according to a parental control application. These techniques also may be used, in accordance with instructional embodiments, to require the administered devices to include certain text in messages. These embodiments might, for example, require that a certain number of Spanish words per day be included in e-mails for a child learning Spanish.

  • Patent number: 8539590
Abstract: When unauthorized use of a device is suspected, a recharging mechanism (e.g., recharge-circuit) of the device is disabled in order to guard against extended unauthorized use of the device. The recharging mechanism normally recharges the rechargeable-power-supply that powers the device. Consequently, normal use and enjoyment of the device can be significantly reduced by disabling the rechager. Moreover, for devices that are mainly powered by a rechargeable-power-supply (e.g., music-players, phones, Personal Digital Assistants), disabling the recharger effectively renders the device inoperable when the power of the main power-supply has run out. As such, disabling the recharger should serve as a deterrent to theft.

  • Patent number: 8538376
Abstract: Event-based modes of operation are supported on an electronic device. One or more event-based modes of operation may be automatically or selectively applied to the device when a new life event is detected. The device's previous mode of operation may be backed up to the device or a network location and restored after the event-based mode of operation is no longer applied. The event-based modes of operation may be used to restrict access to certain applications or functionalities on the device, enforce or restrict certain user interface or other types of settings, and add or remove or rearrange the priority of device assets. The new life events associated with event-based modes of operation may be of various types, including location-based events, environment-based events, calendar-based events, news-based events, and usage-based events.
