Patent number: 7259966Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for reducing rotational vibration transmission within a data storage system. A storage device apparatus comprises a carrier having opposing first and second side plates. A support point may be disposed within the first side plate at about a longitudinal center region of the carrier. The support point is configured to contact an enclosure that mounts a plurality of carriers and is the sole support point in the first side plate. Preferably, the support point is positioned such that minimal rotational vibration is transmitted within the data storage system once the carrier is placed in an enclosure housing a plurality of carriers. A second support point may be disposed in the second side plate.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2004Date of Patent: August 21, 2007Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Donald M. Patent number: 7079392Abstract: A multi function component mounting assembly is shown that, in the environment illustrated, supports a blower in an electronic device chassis in tandem with another component requiring frequent user access such as a media component. The assembly is supported on a sheet metal tray or frame with the blower mounted beneath the distal end of the tray along with its electrical connector which is supported with two degrees of limited motion to accommodate remote auto docking. The tray is secured in the opening by a unitary molded latch element that is permitted limited longitudinal movement with respect to the tray and includes biasing means which engage the tray to bias the assembly into a fully inserted position in the chassis. A drop down handle assists manual insertion and withdrawal of the assembly and disengagement of the latch securing the assembly and is moved to a stored position by insertion of the media component.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2003Date of Patent: July 18, 2006Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jessica Rose Berens, Steven Dale Greseth, William Michael Monson, Scott Alan Shurson

Publication number: 20060074728Abstract: A method and apparatus to efficiently round requested quantities to efficient transportation quantities in the supply chain. Target locations are organized in a sequence. A tolerance interval around the requested quantity is calculated for each target location. The requested value is then rounded to an efficient transportation quantity for each target location in its sequential order.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 28, 2004Publication date: April 6, 2006Inventors: Michael Schweitzer, Edward Huber, Marlon McDonald, Michael Monson, Larry Newbanks, Guenther Baermann, Michael Czach, Eric Eich, Hans Schmitz, Brian Taylor, Mark Fishwick, Ryan Matthews

Publication number: 20060069598Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for distributing stock in a distribution network. The distribution network may include a source location and a plurality of target locations. In the disclosed systems and methods, the stock requirements of the target locations may be categorized into a plurality of requirement types, wherein each requirement type reflects a category of stock requirements for one of the target locations. In addition, the plurality of requirement types may be prioritized by order of importance and/or the plurality of target locations may be prioritized for each requirement type based on at least one sequence rule. Based on the prioritized requirement types and/or prioritized sequence of the target locations, the stock may be distributed to the plurality of target locations.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2004Publication date: March 30, 2006Inventors: Michael Schweitzer, Edward Huber, Marlon McDonald, Michael Monson, Larry Newbanks, Gregory McCoy, Guenther Baermann, Eric Eich, Hans Schmitz, Brian Taylor, Michael Czach, Ryan Matthews

Publication number: 20060069629Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for redeploying stock between inventory locations. The systems and methods may include receiving a redeployment indication indicating stock to be redeployed and determining, based on the redeployment indication, the first inventory location for receiving the stock and the second inventory location for redeploying the stock. Further, the systems and methods may include determining a cost-benefit value based on a savings value and a move cost value, wherein the savings value reflects an amount to be saved if the stock was redeployed from the second location to the first location and wherein the move cost value reflects a cost for redeploying the stock from the second location to the first location. Finally, a determination to deploy the stock may be made by comparing the cost-benefit value to, for example, a redeployment threshold value.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2004Publication date: March 30, 2006Inventors: Michael Schweitzer, Stefan Foerster, Edward Huber, Wayne Smith, Michael Monson, Jim Kemp, Gregory McCoy, Steve Forret, Peggy Harris, Guenther Baermann, Eric Eich, Hans Schmitz, Brian Taylor, Mark Fishwick, Ryan Matthews

Patent number: 6561554Abstract: A latch assembly for a computer or other electronic device includes a lever which is adapted to receive a spring arm integrally molded with a latch. The latch also includes integrally molded pivot pins which are guided by ramps into pivot holes in the lever to mate the latch and lever together. Once assembled, the latch is movable to and between engaged and disengaged positions for closure with a catch on the computer, electronic or other workpiece device. The latch assembly incorporates specific changes to existing parts while reducing the number of parts and the cost of and complexity for assembly. The design is much more easily accommodated in automated assembly equipment to further reduce assembly costs and increase productivity throughput.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2001Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Lee Colbert, Steven Dale Greseth, William Michael Monson

Patent number: 6404651Abstract: An enclosure and method of making the same provides mounting provisions for shields of expansion cards in a general purpose computer that reduce the number of components and manufacturing steps to produce the enclosure, as well as reducing the time required to add or remove expansion cards. In particular, a housing of an enclosure incorporates a shield mount to receive a shield having an extending tongue and a lateral tab. A specific example of such a shield is tail stock for a Peripheral Component Interconnection (PCI) expansion card. In particular, a receptor is formed into the housing for receiving the extending tongue of the shield. A support member extends outward from the enclosure to abut an outwardly bent tab of the shield that projects out of the panel through a tab opening adjacent to the support member. The support member includes a locking detent that fits within a locking recess in the tab of the shield.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Bradley L. Martin, William Michael Monson, Stephen Peter Mroz

Patent number: 6335868Abstract: An enclosure arrangement includes a chassis, and a central electronics complex. The central electronics complex has a cage removably positioned within the chassis. The cage has an open top providing access into the interior of the cage. The central electronics complex also includes a backplane arranged in a horizontal position, and forming a floor of the cage. The backplane has at least one card slot on a surface thereof. The central electronics complex further includes at least one circuit board disposed in the interior of the cage and being removably received by the card slot. The circuit board is arranged in a vertical position so that a gravitational force helps retain the circuit board in the card slot. The cage is removably positioned within the chassis. At least one rail connects the cage to the chassis. The cage is disposed on the rail, and is guidable into the chassis using the rail.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2000Date of Patent: January 1, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Matthew Allen Butterbaugh, Max John Christopher Koschmeder, William Michael Monson, Gary Allen Thompson, Brian Joseph Stanczyk, Wesley H.
