  • Publication number: 20170043621
Abstract: A caster wheel assembly includes a wheel mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis within a wheel carriage such that the wheel rotates about the horizontal axis with respect to the wheel carriage. The wheel carriage is positioned within a retention ring such that the wheel carriage can rotate about the vertical axis with respect to the retention ring. The wheel carriage also has an opening on the bottom surface such that the wheel can make contact with the ground. The horizontal axis about which the wheel rotates is offset from the vertical axis about which the wheel carriage rotates. An outer carriage may be included such that the outer carriage is positioned within the retention ring and the wheel carriage is positioned within the outer carriage. The outer carriage would be able to rotate about the vertical axis with respect to both the retention ring and the wheel carriage.

  • Publication number: 20160251033
Abstract: A hood assembly for a vehicle includes an outer panel and an inner panel. The inner panel includes a plurality of slots or apertures defined in a portion of an edge thereof, disposed to cause a controlled deformation of a left side edge and a right side edge of the hood assembly on receiving a frontal impact. Optionally, at least one lateral crest line may be defined across a width of the inner panel. A hood hinge assembly fixedly attaches the hood assembly to a frame member of the vehicle. In combination, the slots or apertures, optional crest line, and fixed hood hinge assembly reduce rearward displacement of the hood assembly on receiving a frontal impact, thereby reducing damage to vehicle components such as the a-pillar, body side panels, and fenders.

  • Publication number: 20150239082
Abstract: An improved parallel kinematic mechanism to orient a platform has a higher range of motion for its volume due to the use of magnetically coupled ball joints at the orienting platform and the individual linear actuators operating those joints. The linear actuators may be printed circuit board (PCB) based voice coil actuators, in a magnetic field which may be generated by permanent magnets configured as a modified Halbach array. The PCB based voice coil actuators may have a position sensitive device (PSD) embedded on the PCB to assist in determining location of the actuator with a high degree of accuracy. The payload of the orienting platform may be dynamically repositioned with improved accuracy and speed.
