Patent number: 11661938Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for pumps that deliver optimized torque characteristics and volumetric efficiency. A system includes a housing defining a surface and a rotor defining a face. A face clearance is defined between the face and the surface. The face clearance is variable in magnitude and determinative of target performance characteristics of the pump system. The housing is made of a material selected to have a thermal expansion characteristic and the rotor is made of a second material selected to have another thermal expansion characteristic. The thermal expansion characteristics deliver the target performance characteristics of the pump system.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2021Date of Patent: May 30, 2023Assignee: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Robert Benson Parrish, Michael P Fannin, Avinash Singh, Ryan David Rosinski, Alan Clifford Taylor, Thomas John Fonville

Patent number: 10895257Abstract: A gerotor pump assembly, and a system and method for operating a gerotor pump assembly, result in a lubrication strategy for operating in a loss-of-prime mode. An inner drive gear may be rotated in a first direction and in a second opposite direction about an axis of rotation. The inner drive gear has a number of projections extending outwardly therefrom. An outer driven gear surrounds the inner drive gear and defines a number of recessions along an inner surface configured to engage with the projections of the inner drive gear. The outer driven gear and the inner drive gear further define at least one dynamically-changing fluid cavity therebetween. The inner drive gear and the outer driven gear define an oil transfer volume clearance between a projection and a recession in a fully engaged position. Oil is maintained within the oil transfer volume clearance as the inner drive gear is rotated.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2018Date of Patent: January 19, 2021Assignee: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Robert Parrish, Michael P. Fannin, Ted T. Selever

Patent number: 9033681Abstract: An integrated control valve body and hydraulic pump for an automatic transmission includes a control valve body having a plurality of control valves and passageways and an internal cavity having an inlet and an outlet, a pump rotor received within the internal cavity and having a plurality of radially and axially extending slots, radially moveable vanes and a shaft, and a device for transferring drive energy from a drive shaft extending between an output of a torque converter and an input of the transmission to the shaft of the hydraulic pump. The device for transferring drive energy may be a pair of chain sprockets and a chain, a pair of spur or helical gears or other inter-axis power transfer components and may affect a speed increase or reduction.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2009Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, LLCInventors: Michael P. Patent number: 8764977Abstract: A sump filter assembly for filtering hydraulic fluid supplied by a transmission sump includes a filter housing, a support member, a retainer member, and a biasing member. The filter housing has a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the bottom surface opposes a bottom surface of the transmission sump. The support member includes a first end portion attached to the filter housing. The retainer member is slideably connected to the support member and includes a first end portion having a retaining surface, wherein the retaining surface opposes the top surface of the filter housing. The biasing member has a first end in contact with the retaining surface of the retainer member and a second end in contact with the top surface of the filter housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2009Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, LLCInventors: Todd A Frerichs, Michael P. Fannin, John A. Diemer, Robert Neil Paciotti
