Patent number: 8130439Abstract: A system for producing modulated lights disclosed. The system comprises a spatial light modulator including a light modulating medium switchable between different states so as to act on light in ways which form overall patterns of modulated light. The system also includes an arrangement for switching the modulating medium between the different states in a controlled way and an illumination arrangement for producing a source of light. The system, further includes an optics arrangement for directing light from the source of light into the spatial light modulator and for directing light from the spatial light modulator through a predetermined source imaging area. Patent number: 6690499Abstract: A multi-state light modulating system having grayscale based on a series of time intervals includes an arrangement that establishes the duration of each time interval such that the time intervals in the series have progressively varying duration. The arrangement also determines a drive signal for each time interval that causes the light modulator to assume a specific light modulating state. The arrangement also causes the light modulator to produce a desired time-averaged light level over the series of time intervals by in part driving the light modulator using the drive signal that corresponds to a particular time interval for a duration that is longer than the duration of the time interval. The arrangement also or alternatively arranges the series of time intervals such that the light modulator is in the same state immediately prior to the particular time interval as the light modulator is in immediately after the time interval.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2000Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: Displaytech, Inc.Inventors: Per H. Patent number: 5746640Abstract: A motion-activated musical device is disclosed which sounds harmonic overtones of a longitudinal resonator. Swinging the device causes the formation of a pressure differential across the device. This pressure differential causes air to flow through the longitudinal resonator, initiating an oscillation in the hole tone resonator. A standing wave is then established in the longitudinal resonator in response to this oscillation and a musical tone results. Variations in motion cause the device to sound a sequence of harmonically related musical tones.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1996Date of Patent: May 5, 1998Inventor: Michael R. Meadows

Patent number: 5381250Abstract: A family of optical switches employ dielectric film polarizing beam splitters and switchable electro-optic retarder to produce 2.times.2 optical switches which exhibit low crosstalk characteristics while switching unpolarized or linearly polarized collimated light. The switches all contain four port modules through which light enters and leaves the switch. The port modules utilize polarizing beam splitters to separate incoming light into two orthogonal linearly polarized components. The component beams are made parallel after which each passes through an electro-optic retarder. The retarders are electrically driven so as to selectively change the polarization of either one of the two component beams, thus making the polarizations the same. Other polarizing beam splitters are disposed to direct the component beams along one of two pairs of paths as determined by their common polarization.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1992Date of Patent: January 10, 1995Assignee: Displaytech, Inc.Inventor: Michael R. Patent number: 4694159Abstract: An optic displacement sensor includes first and second optic circuits which optic circuits include di-directional means for a light supply path to and a light return path from a light reflecting surface means. The first optic circuit is a reference signal circuit, and the second optic circuit is a measuring signal circuit. Means are provided for directing light into the light supply paths for the pair of optic circuits, and means are provided whereby the light from the light supply paths of the pair of optic circuits is received by light reflecting means and at least partially reflected into the light return paths where it is detected. Further, the sensor includes means for adjusting the detected signal from one of the light return paths with respect to the detected light from the other light return path.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1986Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Assignee: Dieterich Standard CorporationInventors: Larry E.
