  • Patent number: 5424131
Abstract: A protective coating for the surfaces of organic polymers, to protect the surfaces against erosion by oxygen atoms, includes a thin protective barrier film on the surfaces. The film is deposited via a plasma, e.g., a low pressure glow charge, or other suitable methods. The material of the film can comprise plasma polymers, inorganic insulating films, or semiconducting or conductive materials.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 25, 1993
Date of Patent: June 13, 1995
    Assignee: Polyplasma, Inc.
Inventors: Michael R. Wertheimer, Henry P. Schreiber
  • Patent number: 5041303
Abstract: The disclosure herein describes a process for modifying large polymeric surfaces; a thin, uniform coating is deposited at near ambient temperature on the surfaces in a large-volume plasma apparatus, the plasma state being produced by using electromagnetic energy in the microwave frequency range. The surfaces thus coated constitute a barrier against permeation by oxygen and moisture.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 7, 1988
Date of Patent: August 20, 1991
    Assignee: Polyplasma Incorporated
Inventors: Michael R. Wertheimer, Henry P. Schreiber
  • Patent number: 4744860
Abstract: Process for treating at least one surface of a non-polar polymeric material to improve the receptivity of that surface to coloration with an acid dye, which comprises treating said surface of the material with a low temperature microwave plasma from a chemical compound which is capable of creating receptor sites for acid dye on said surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 14, 1987
Date of Patent: May 17, 1988
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: Leopold Cop, Jan Jordaan, Henry P. Schreiber, Michael R. Wertheimer
  • Patent number: 4728863
Abstract: An apparatus for substantially uniformly treating a substrate with a microwave plasma consists of a mechanism for simultaneously moving the substrate in two directions relative to the direction of plasma production. In one embodiment, the substrate is simultaneously moved rotationally and translationally. In a second embodiment, the substrate is subjected to planetary motion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 4, 1985
Date of Patent: March 1, 1988
    Inventor: Michael R. Wertheimer
  • Patent number: 4599678
Abstract: A plasma-deposited silicon compound thin film dielectric for use in a thin film capacitor. The film is produced in a high frequency glow discharge with a substrate heated to a temperature in excess of 50.degree. C. A thin film capacitor using such a film has a lower dissipation factor and a reduced tendency to age.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 19, 1985
Date of Patent: July 8, 1986
Inventors: Michael R. Wertheimer, Tyamagondlu S. Ramu
  • Patent number: 4557946
Abstract: The invention comprises a method of controlling the water permeability of a coating applied to a substrate, in particular for the case of organosilicone coatings.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 3, 1983
Date of Patent: December 10, 1985
Inventors: Edward Sacher, Michael R. Wertheimer, Henry P. Schreiber
  • Patent number: 4407852
Abstract: This invention relates to electrets which comprise a film of plasma polymerized dielectric material having a volumetric space charge.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 16, 1980
Date of Patent: October 4, 1983
