  • Publication number: 20060152878
Abstract: A mechanical reinforcement for an electrical apparatus has at least one electrical element with an outer surface and a reinforcing structure attached to the outer surface. The electrical element may be a monolithic MOV disk or a bonded MOV disk stack. The monolithic element may, for example, have a rating greater than 6 kV. The reinforcing structure may be pre-impregnated fiber matrix that may be, for example, pre-impregnated with resin. The mechanical reinforcement provides improved high current durability to the electrical apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20050243495
Abstract: A liquid immersed surge arrester that protects electrical equipment includes a module assembly. The module assembly includes at least one varistor and a pre-impregnated composite around the at least one varistor. The liquid immersed surge arrester also includes contacts on opposite ends of the module assembly with which the module assembly is connected to electrical equipment to be protected and to electrical ground. The liquid immersed surge arrester also includes a tank that houses the module assembly and the contacts. A fault-tolerant protection device for protecting electrical equipment includes a surge arrester to protect electrical equipment from damage during periods of voltage above a normal operating range. The fault-tolerant protection device also includes a surge durable fuse element to disconnect the surge arrester after failure of the surge arrester to allow unprotected operation of the electrical system.

  • Publication number: 20050207084
Abstract: A station class surge arrester includes a module assembly. The module assembly includes at least one metal oxide varistor (MOV) disk and a pre-impregnated composite that is applied around the at least one MOV disk. The pre-impregnated composite is capable of withstanding an 80 kA fault current for 12 cycles. The station class surge arrester also includes contacts on opposite ends of the module assembly with which the module assembly is connected to electrical equipment to be protected and to electrical ground.

  • Publication number: 20050160587
Abstract: An electrical module assembly used in a surge arrester is manufactured by wrapping an electrical module assembly including at least one metal oxide varistor (MOV) disk to which a reinforcing structure including a pre-impregnated epoxy/glass-fiber composite has been applied with shrink film and compacting the wrapped electrical module assembly by heating the shrink film such that the shrink film shrinks and applies a radially compressive force to the electrical module assembly. The wrapped electrical module assembly then is cured at a temperature at which the shrink film no longer applies a compressive force.

  • Publication number: 20050110607
Abstract: A fuse includes an electrical assembly and a fuse tube assembly. The electrical assembly has two electrical contacts accessible from the exterior of the fuse and a fuse element in contact with the two electrical contacts. The fuse tube assembly includes a support structure surrounding at least a portion of the electrical assembly and a reinforcing structure formed over the support structure and in contact with at least a portion of the electrical assembly. The reinforcing structure is made of a fiber matrix pre-impregnated with a resin.
