  • Patent number: 6820182
Abstract: A memory exhaustion condition is handled in a data processing system having first and second regions of physical memory. The memory exhaustion condition is detected while the second region is mirroring at least part of the first region. In response to the memory exhaustion condition, memory mirroring is at least partially deactivated and at least part of the second region is utilized to augment the first region, such that the memory exhaustion condition is eliminated. In an illustrative embodiment, the data processing system compresses real memory into the first region of physical memory, and the memory exhaustion condition arises when the first region lacks sufficient available capacity to accommodate current requirements for real memory. The memory exhaustion condition is eliminated by compressing at least part of the real memory into the second region.

  • Patent number: 5940586
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for enabling or disabling an ISA adapter or bus expansion device. In one embodiment of the invention, the housing slot is first checked to see whether the device is installed. If the device is installed and is malfunctioning or defective, the device is then isolated or disabled to allow the system to continue to operate. In another embodiment of the invention, a check is done to determine whether the housing slot has changed from an empty to a full status and vice versa. This check determines whether configuration status of an adapter, stored in memory, should be deleted. This check also allows for the differentiation of a PNP adapter card from a legacy adapter card.

  • Patent number: 5852738
Abstract: A method for managing a memory address space in a memory system, the memory system having multiple block address translation entries, each entry defining a portion of the memory address space, including the steps of determining that a received virtual address references a portion of the memory address space not defined by any of the block address translation entries, reallocating at least one of the block address translation entries to define a portion of the memory address space including the received virtual address, and providing a physical address matching the virtual address by using the reallocated block address translation entries.

  • Patent number: 5732280
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically selecting adapter card identifiers within a computer system having expansion slots. Name strings used by the computer system, such as in a system using Micro Channel expansion slots, identify the installed adapter card. The method and apparatus distinguish automatically between adapter cards upon installation. This is accomplished by, responsive to identifying a newly installed adapter card, transforming the default POS name string to an alternate identifier. Next, additional random values are added to the transformed alternate identifier to increase identifier uniqueness. Then, portions of the name string are matched to a field within the alternate identifier, before storing the identifier, for allowing the computer to identify the correct alternate identifier matching the newly installed adapter card. The new identifier is stored in both the expansion slot addressing region and on the adapter card.
