  • Patent number: 12454906
Abstract: New and/or alternative approaches to performance control in an engine system having a compressor configured to receive torque from each of a turbine placed in an exhaust output of an engine and an electric motor. A control unit for the electric motor, referred to as an ETurbo controller, is provided with each of a speed control signal and a torque control signal from an engine control unit. The ETurbo controller is configured to use the torque control signal and speed control signal to operate the electric motor without causing the compressor to exceed a speed boundary.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 14, 2021
Date of Patent: October 28, 2025
    Assignee: Garrett Transportation I Inc.
Inventors: Michael Robert Uchanski, Malay Maniar, Andrew Love, Daniele Zecchetti, Jungsik Yim

  • Publication number: 20210293193
Abstract: The speed of a turbocharger may be estimated using data from sensors that are readily available in most engine management systems. In some cases, a pressure measurement from a MAP sensor may be used, in combination with one or more computational models, to provide an efficient, lower cost estimate of turbo speed that can be used to control operation of the engine and/or the turbocharger.

  • Patent number: 10876467
Abstract: A method for controlling an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for a compressor so as to switch the mechanism between open and closed positions for adjusting a flow area of the inlet. The method includes an algorithm for determining when the inlet-adjustment mechanism is in a failure mode. In accordance with the method, when the operating point on the compressor map is on the high-flow side of a threshold line at which the inlet-adjustment mechanism is switched from one position to the other, a measured speed or pressure ratio is compared to a theoretical value for the speed or pressure ratio based on a compressor map for the open position of the mechanism. If the measured value differs from the theoretical value by more than a predetermined tolerance, a failure mode is indicated.
