  • Patent number: 8907930
Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for determining location of an input on a surface of a device using an acoustic sensing element. An exemplary method begins by determining an anticipated acoustic response resulting from an output generated by a component of the device at the acoustic sensing element. The method continues by subtracting the anticipated acoustic response from a measured acoustic response at the acoustic sensing element to obtain a nominal acoustic response, and determining the location of the input based on the nominal acoustic response.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 4, 2011
Date of Patent: December 9, 2014
    Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLC
    Inventors: William Alberth, Michael Schellinger

  • Publication number: 20060284765
Abstract: A mobile wireless communication device (200) including a wireless transceiver (210) communicably coupled to a processor (220), a satellite positioning system receiver (250), wherein the processor controls an operating mode of the satellite positioning system receiver based on satellite positioning system operating mode information received by the wireless transceiver when the mobile wireless communication device is in a vicinity of a location or will be in the vicinity on which the satellite positioning system operating mode information is based. Controlling the operating mode includes controller whether and when and the frequency with which location measurements are made.

  • Publication number: 20050219228
Abstract: A user interface 103 for an electronic device 101 (and corresponding method) is arranged and constructed for intuitive control of interface functionality. The user interface includes: a user interface component, e.g. speaker, microphone, display backlighting, etc., that is one of a plurality of user interface components 105; interface circuitry 117 coupled to the user interface components 105; and a sensor 129 located in a position that is logically associated with, e.g. proximate to or co-located with, the user interface component and configured to provide an output signal when the sensor 129 is triggered, e.g. by proximity to a user, where the output signal facilitates, via for example a controller 143, a change in an operating mode of one or more of the user interface components 105.
