Publication number: 20220236293Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methods of assessing a concentration of iron in a body fluid sample, such as whole blood. Systems include a highly stable, fast reacting, and accurate sensing area of a sensor for contacting with a body fluid sample, wherein upon contact, the body fluid sample causes a color change to the sensor that correlates with the concentration of iron in the body fluid sample. The disclosed systems and methods generate one or more signal outputs of light intensity data, from which the concentration of iron in the body fluid sample is determined.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2020Publication date: July 28, 2022Inventors: Erica Forzani, David Jackemeyer, Michael Serhan

Patent number: 9333133Abstract: A wheelchair having an adjustable seat includes a seat frame including first and second side support members. The side support members are extendable between a first position defining a first length and a second position defining a second length greater than the first length. A seat member is coupled at a first side thereof to the first side support member and at a second side thereof to the second side support member. The seat member extends between the first and second side support members to define a seat area having an initial depth corresponding to the first length of the side support members and a width corresponding to a distance between the side support members. The seat member includes an auxiliary portion for extending the seat member to an extended depth corresponding to the second length of the side support members.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2014Date of Patent: May 10, 2016Assignee: Drive Medical Design & Mfg.Inventor: Michael Serhan

Patent number: 9289340Abstract: A patient care bed includes a frame, a side rail, and a side rail mounting assembly. The side rail mounting assembly includes a rail-receiving member defining a passageway configured to releasably receive the side rail and a support rod fixedly engaged to and extending from the rail-receiving member. The support rod is slidable relative to the frame between a storage position, wherein the rail-receiving member is disposed within the frame, and a use position, wherein the rail-receiving member is disposed outside the frame. The support rod is rotatable relative to the frame between a storage orientation, wherein the rail-receiving member is horizontal, and a use orientation, wherein the rail-receiving member is vertical. The side rail mounting assembly is transitionable between a storage condition, corresponding to the storage position and orientation of the support rod, and a use condition, corresponding to the use position and orientation of the support rod.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2012Date of Patent: March 22, 2016Assignee: Drive Medical Design & Mfg.Inventor: Michael Serhan

Patent number: 9215937Abstract: An adjustable side rail assembly includes a side rail and an actuation assembly. The side rail is rotatable between a storage position and a use position. The actuation assembly includes an inner member, an outer member, and a locking assembly. The outer member is coupled to the side rail and is rotatable relative to the inner member between first and second rotational orientations for rotating the side rail between the storage and use positions, respectively. The locking assembly is transitional between a locked condition, wherein the locking assembly engages both the inner and outer members to fix the inner and outer members in the first or second rotational orientation, and an unlocked condition, wherein the locking assembly is disengaged from the inner and/or outer member to permit rotation of the outer member relative to the inner member between the first and second rotational orientations.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2013Date of Patent: December 22, 2015Assignee: Drive Medical Design & Mfg.Inventor: Michael Serhan

Patent number: 9149400Abstract: An adjustable mattress includes a body portion and an extension portion. The body portion includes a first plurality of spaced-apart fingers extending outwardly from at least one edge thereof. The extension portion includes a second plurality of spaced-apart fingers extending outwardly therefrom. The first plurality of fingers are configured for inter-fit engagement with the second plurality of fingers. The extension portion is movable relative to the body portion to vary a degree of inter-fit engagement of the fingers between a first position, wherein the adjustable mattress defines a first dimension, and a second position, wherein the adjustable mattress defines a second dimension.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2013Date of Patent: October 6, 2015Assignee: Drive Medical Design & Mfg.Inventor: Michael Serhan

Patent number: 9084493Abstract: An adjustable bed system includes first and second end boards. A first height adjustment mechanism is secured to the first end board via a first mounting member and a second height adjustment mechanism is secured to the second end board via a second mounting member. The second height adjustment mechanism is independent of the first height adjustment mechanism. An external housing member is engagable with one of the first and second mounting members. A transition box is operatively engagable with one of the first and second height adjustment mechanisms. The transition box is positioned within the external housing such that the transition box is substantially inhibited from rotation during height adjustment of the bed system. A drive shaft interconnects the transition box, at a first end thereof, and the other of the first and second height adjustment mechanisms, at a second end thereof.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2014Date of Patent: July 21, 2015Assignee: Drive Medical Design & Mfg.Inventor: Michael Serhan

Patent number: 8840124Abstract: A safety brake type rollator that will prevent the misuse of rollators by seated users by using a braking system that locks the rollator wheels when the user sits down on the rollator seat, and releases when the user stands up. The cables that run from the hand brakes of the rollator to under the rollator seat are stretched by the user sitting down on the rollator seat, so locking the wheels. According to a further embodiment, whenever a user sits on the seat the braking system pulls the hand brakes into the locked position, so engaging the wheel brake mechanisms. According to this further embodiment, the hand brakes must then be disengaged from the locked position when the user stands up from the seat for the rollator to be mobile.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2012Date of Patent: September 23, 2014Assignee: Medical Depot, Inc.Inventors: Michael Serhan, Doug Francis
