Patent number: 11356721Abstract: Content is automatically removed from closed-caption data embedded in a video signal. A closed-caption compliance system decodes a first portion of a first video frame that includes a closed-caption data packet. The system extracts a first character string that includes at least a portion of the closed-caption data packet. The system determines whether the first character string is suitable for distribution to viewers. If the first character string is suitable for distribution to viewers, then the system encodes at least a first portion of the first character string as a second closed-caption data packet to include in a second video frame. Otherwise, the system modifies the first character string to generate a second character string that is suitable for distribution to viewers; and encodes at least a first portion of the second character string as a third closed-caption data packet to include in the second video frame.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2019Date of Patent: June 7, 2022Assignee: Disney Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Michael Strein, William McLaughlin

Patent number: 10812839Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention disclosed herein provide techniques for automatically generating a recorded version of a live video program. A live program extraction application executing on a live program extraction system receives an automation list associated with the live video program from a traffic and automation system and an integration message associated with the live video program from an integration control system. The live program extraction application generates a first data entry that includes a timecode based on at least one of the automation list and the integration message. The live program extraction application stores the first data entry into a data record associated with the live video program. The live program extraction application transmits the data record to a broadcast system. The broadcast system automatically replaces a portion of the recorded version of the live video program based on the timecode included in the first data entry.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2018Date of Patent: October 20, 2020Assignee: Disney Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Vladislav Feldman, Joseph Kenny, Michael Strein

Patent number: 10791378Abstract: In one embodiment, a change over application distributes video content received from multiple origination sources. The change over application computes a first score based on a portion of first origination video content received from a first origination source, where the first origination source is associated with a first IP address. The change over application then determines a second origination source of second origination video content based on the first score and a selection criterion, where the second origination source is associated with a second IP address. Subsequently, the change over application transmits portions of the second origination video content received from the second origination source to the destination as portions of the distribution video content. Advantageously, unlike previous approaches to optimizing distribution video content, because a processor executes the change over application, dedicated hardware is not required.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2017Date of Patent: September 29, 2020Assignee: Disney Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Michael Strein, Efthimis Stefanidis, Vladislav Feldman

Patent number: 10070184Abstract: Embodiments herein describe a content distribution system that removes time-dependent promotional content before providing a recording of a media presentation (e.g., show or program) to a video-on-demand (VOD) provider. To receive Nielsen credit for a subscriber watching a recording of the media presentation using VOD, the recording must be almost the same as the live version of the media presentation which includes the original program content and the commercial advertisements shown during commercial breaks. However, some shows also include promotional content that a telecommunication or cable provider adds to the media presentation to promote other shows or events being broadcasted later. By the time the user views the recording, however, the promotional content may already be outdated. The embodiments herein describe techniques for removing time-dependent promotional content from a media presentation before the recording of the media presentation is sent to VOD providers.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2017Date of Patent: September 4, 2018Assignee: Disney Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Steven Machanic, Robert Jensen, Hugh McGuire, Raul Rapalo, Michael Strein, Vladislav Feldman, Jeffrey Corwin, Kenneth Michel
