    Abstract: Apparatus for forming a cased glass stream having an inner core glass surrounded by an outer casing glass includes a first orifice for receiving core glass from a first source, and an orifice ring forming a second orifice vertically spaced beneath and aligned with the first orifice. A chamber surrounds the second orifice and communicates with the second orifice through a metering gap between the first and second orifices. Casing glass is delivered from a second source to the chamber, such that glass flows by gravity from the first and second sources through the orifices to form the cased glass stream. A heater ring of refractory material is disposed beneath the orifice ring, and includes at least one electrical heater embedded in the refractory material of the heater ring. The electrical heater is thus disposed external to the casing glass chamber for adding heat to casing glass flowing through the chamber to the metering gap.

    Abstract: Apparatus for controlling rate of molten glass flow through a forehearth that includes a flume disposed in the forehearth for restricting the width of the forehearth to glass flow, such that there is a difference in level of molten glass in the forehearth upstream and downstream of the flume. Sensors measure the level of molten glass upstream and downstream of the flume, and a controller is responsive to the sensors for determining rate of molten glass flow through the forehearth as a function of a difference in molten glass level between the sensors. Rate of glass flow through the forehearth is controlled as a function of the difference in glass level across the flume as compared with a desired flow rate set by an operator.

A resistance heated tube assembly is made of platinum or material having similar resistance heating properties and extends from a glass source to an orifice through which the glass flows from a glass source for the inner layer. The tube assembly includes a tube portion having an inlet end that communicates with the source for the outer layer and an outlet end that communicates with the source. The tube portion has an axis positioned at any angle ranging between the horizontal and vertical but preferably has an axis which is more vertical than horizontal. Flanges are secured to the ends of said tube portion, and the flanges are connected to an electric power supply.

    Abstract: An apparatus for spraying the surfaces of glass containers which are being moved in longitudinally spaced transverse rows by a conveyor wherein a rodless air cylinder is mounted transversely of the conveyor and the spraying apparatus is connected to the piston of the rodless cylinder so that the spraying apparatus is moved transversely of the rows of containers. The rodless cylinder is supported for pivotal movement about a vertical axis so that the axis of the cylinder may be moved to a position other than a right angle to the longitudinal axis of movement of the conveyor. The offset of the angle from a right angle and the speed of traverse of the piston is coordinated with the conveyor speed so that any time during the travel, the spray apparatus is spraying between the rows being sprayed.

    Abstract: A method for preparing a glass container, and for sealing a glass mouth of a container and the seal are described. The sealing surface, or finish, of the container is subjected to a hot end treatment after forming and before annealing to enhance adhesion between the container finish and a thermoplastic membrane seal. The container is next annealed and after annealing is subjected to a cold end treatment in which the exterior container surface is coated with a material which enhances the lubricity and increases the abrasion and scratch resistance of the container. The container finish only is then subjected to a brief heat treatment sufficient to remove any lubricity enhancing material from the finish. A membrane comprising a thermoplastic film is pressed onto the container finish and heated causing glass-plastic adhesion and forming a closure.
