    Abstract: A shaft seal assembly having an annular member affixed to the shaft for rotation therewith, a sleeve encompassing the shaft and being biased axially towards the annular member and a free floating sealing ring interposed between the annular member and the sleeve to prevent pressurized working substance form leaking about the shaft is disclosed. The sealing ring includes internal flow passageways which act to reduce the pressure of lubricant flowing therethrough to both effectively cool the free floating ring and to reduce the pressure of the lubricant obviating the necessity of a separate breakdown bushing.
