    Abstract: A mattress and method custom fitted to a user. The mattress includes a top cover zippered over a top of the mattress, and an encasement extending beneath the top cover, having a sidewall extending up and around an outer perimeter of the encasement. The mattress includes a plurality of support layer foam pads or strips positionable in the encasement, on a sub-layer thereof so that the sidewall of the encasement extends around an outer perimeter of the pads/strips. At least one of the pads/strips provides a different level of firmness relative to a level of firmness provided by another of the pads/strips, and the pads/strips are removable from the encasement. The pads/strips allow customization of the sleep surface, so that customized firmness (i.e., support) is provided, particularly in the lumbar region of the spine, to ensure no more than ¾ inch of compression in the lumbar support layer strip occurs.

The backrest member may include an adjustable platform attached to a substrate (e.g., frame) of the backrest member, and an adjustment mechanism configured to adjust the adjustable platform along one or more locations of the platform to provide a desired contour for supporting the back of a user seated in the chair. The adjustable platform may comprise an elongate band attached to the substrate of the backrest member that is disposed along a central longitudinal axis of the backrest member. One end of the elongate band may be attached to the substrate, while an opposite end may be slidably attached to the substrate. In an embodiment, both ends may be slidably attached relative to the substrate. The device allows selection of a height and depth of a lumbar curve provided by the device.

    Abstract: Devices and related methods of use for providing repetitive spinal extension exercise. The device includes a frame extending between a foot end and a head end, a footrest member at the foot end of the frame, and a horizontal seat member between the foot end and the head end of the frame. A height-adjustable back pad fulcrum is attached to the frame between the seat member and a pivoting post is attached to the head end of the frame. The pivoting post is positioned behind the back pad fulcrum, and may be biased to default to an acute angle relative to the seat member. The pivoting post may include a back roller or pad attached thereto (e.g., near a top end thereof) so that a user seated on the seat member may press the roller and pivoting post backwards as the user rearwardly extends an upper portion of the torso.

    Abstract: A device and methods for quantitatively measuring spinal contours and flexibility are provided. The device includes a plurality of substantially parallel coplanar shafts slidable within a guide block. One end of each shaft lies within a chamber which may be pressurized, thereby urging the opposite ends of the shafts to gently deploy against a patient's spine. The shafts may be locked in position with a keeper strip. The relative positions of the shafts may be quantified, and these quantified positions may be processed according to methods of the present invention to obtain reliable quantitative summaries of the curvature and flexibility of selected spinal contours.
