The holster of the invention has a locking tab which moves vertically into engagement with the ejection port of a semi-automatic hand gun, and is configured for activation from either a left or a right handed user, by use of a finger or thumb release positioned on either the right or the left side. The hand gun may also be configured to contain both a thumb and a finger release tab, and may be so configured for either a left or a right handed user without changing the basic configuration of the device.
