Patent number: 11037376Abstract: A plant or refinery may include equipment such as condensers, regenerators, distillation columns, rotating equipment, compressors, pumps, turbines, or the like. Different operating methods may impact deterioration in equipment condition, thereby prolonging equipment life, extending production operating time, or providing other benefits. Mechanical or digital sensors may be used for monitoring equipment to determine whether problems are developing. For example, sensors may be used in conjunction with one or more system components to perform invariant mapping, monitor system operating characteristics, and/or predict pressure, volume, surges, reactor loop fouling, gas quality, or the like. An operating condition (e.g., of one or more pieces of equipment in the plant or refinery) may be adjusted to prolong equipment life or avoid equipment failure.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2018Date of Patent: June 15, 2021Assignee: UOP LLCInventors: Michael Van de Cotte, Ian G. Patent number: 10794225Abstract: A turbine with a supersonic separator disposed upstream of the turbine. The supersonic separator imparts a swirl on a vapor stream to remove any heavier components. A superheated vapor stream from the supersonic separator is passed through the turbine to reduce the pressure of the vapor stream. At the same time, electricity is generated by the superheated vapor stream via a turbine wheel. The turbine and the supersonic separator can be integrally formed, or they can be discrete components.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2018Date of Patent: October 6, 2020Assignee: UOP LLCInventors: Stanley Joseph Frey, Michael Van de Cotte

Patent number: 10753235Abstract: Processes and apparatus for recovering energy from a petroleum, petrochemical, or chemical process are disclosed. The process comprises providing a fluid process stream in a petroleum, petrochemical, or chemical process zone having a direct current power input; controlling a flow rate of the process stream by directing at least a portion of the process stream through a first power-recovery turbine to generate electric power as direct current therefrom; and providing the recovered direct current to the direct current power input of the process zone.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2018Date of Patent: August 25, 2020Assignee: UOP LLCInventors: James W. Harris, Donald A. Eizenga, Michael Van de Cotte, David A. Wegerer

Patent number: 10745631Abstract: Methods and apparatus for recovering power in a hydroprocessing process are described. The method involves the use of a power-recovery turbine in place of, or in addition to, a control valve. A hydrocarbon feed stream is combined with a portion of a hydrogen stream. The combined stream is heated, and the heated stream is introduced into a hydroprocessing reaction zone having at least two beds. The heated stream is contacted with a first hydroprocessing catalyst to form a first hydroprocessed stream. At least part of a portion of the hydrogen stream is combined with the first hydroprocessed stream to form a first quenched hydroprocessed stream. The first quenched hydroprocessed stream is contacted with a second hydroprocessing catalyst to form a second hydroprocessed stream. At least a portion of the second portion of the hydrogen stream is directed through a power-recovery turbine to generate electric power.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2018Date of Patent: August 18, 2020Assignee: UOP LLCInventors: Stanley Joseph Frey, James W. Harris, Michael Van de Cotte
