  • Publication number: 20090228842
Abstract: In accordance with some embodiments, a computer-implemented text selection method is performed using an electronic device having a touch-sensitive display. The method can include displaying text on the touch screen display; detecting a text selection initiation gesture with the touch screen display; and in response to the text selection initiation gesture, inserting a text selection area bounded by a first endpoint located in the text at a first location and a second endpoint in the text at a second location. First and second endpoints can be moved by performing further gestures on the touch-sensitive display. Furthermore, word processing functions can be performed on the on the text located in the text selection area.

  • Publication number: 20090096642
Abstract: Data values are encoded for transmission to a recipient on a communication channel. Performance information associated with the encoding or the communication channel is obtained and used at least in part to determine quantization factors used in the encoding. The data values can be scaled based on the quantization factors and ordered based on a probability factor. A portion of the data values can be selected based on content. A code table can be selected based on a variation of the data values, where the code table specifies codewords including at least one of bits representative of a divisor, bits representative of a remainder, and a bit representative of a sign. Codewords can be generated for the data values using the code table. The encoded data values can be transmitted to a recipient where the data values are decoded using a decoder.

  • Publication number: 20090050734
Abstract: A flow control actuator 10 for a body exposed to fluid flow comprises first and second flow surfaces 14, 16 spaced to define an elongate gap 20 therebetween. An elongate control element is disposed in or adjacent the gap and has an externally facing arcuate surface and defines a first slot 24 between the control element and said first flow surface and a second slot between said control element and said second flow surface 26. The control element 22 is moveable to allow the width of said slots to be adjusted generally proportionally. The flow of pressurised flow control fluid passes from a plenum chamber 30 out through one or both slots 24, 26 to be deflected around the arcuate surface under the influence of the Coanda effect. The flow control actuator 10 may be provided in the trailing or leading edge of an aerofoil; alternatively it may be provided between two surfaces spaced to provide said gap but otherwise providing a generally continuous surface.

  • Publication number: 20080209781
Abstract: A device for displaying a disabled parking permit includes a partially rounded housing with a flat fascia with a hook for hanging the device from a rear view mirror of an automobile. The disabled parking permit is required on opposite faces of a flexible sheet that is wound onto a spring loaded roll in order to contain it within the housing while driving. And this housing must not hang any lower than one and a quarter inch below the mirror. The placard can be pulled down from a slot opening on the bottom of the housing to a fully extended positioning order to display the disabled parking permit in a manner that allows visibility from both the front and the rear of the handicap persons automobile when the vehicle is parked. The placard must be retracted and rolled up within the housing, onto the spring-loaded roll, to avoid obstruction of view while driving. The width, length, colors, and indicia all being factors that must meet stringent municipal requirements.

  • Publication number: 20080190441
Abstract: An ergonomic tangle free hair brush having an integrally attached handle and brush head. The handle is shaped for comfort when being used by a hairstylist. It is generally formed as a surface of revolution and is coated with a soft covering having good gripping characteristics. The brush head is spool shaped to be of a concave surface or revolution having enlarged ends. The surface of hair engaging portion of the brush head contains many bristle sites. These sites may be formed to yield a spiral shaped row of bristles. The adjacent rows of bristles are off set from the previous row to provide maximum contact with the hair being brushed. Each site has two different types of bristles emanating therefrom. The surface of the concave brush surface may be coated with a colour changing thermochromic material. The end of the brush head remote from the handle is flat, producing a natural resting surface for the is brush when not in use.

  • Patent number: 7006676
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for detecting an abnormality in a host medium, such as a tumor within a patient's breast. The host medium is initially illuminated at a plurality of different positions with light of at least two different wavelengths. Following the propagation of the signals through the host medium, the amplitude and phase of the signals are detected and, based upon the detected signals, a shadow image can be created in which the abnormality is depicted as a suspicious region. Once a suspicious region has been identified, at least that portion of the host medium that contains the suspicious region is again illuminated with frequency-swept modulated signals of at least two different wavelengths generated by the light source and modulated by a modulator, such as a network analyzer.

  • Publication number: 20040210622
Abstract: A method for providing security in a networked multimedia computing system is provided wherein an administrative workstation is challenged by a network workstation when the administrative workstation is attempting to manipulate or query the network workstation. The administrative workstation responds in an automatic fashion to supply a series of logically acceptable password candidates to the challenging workstation in an attempt to validate itself to the challenging network workstation without interrupting a user. If none of the series of passwords is successful, an administrator, or user, operating the administrative workstation is prompted to manually enter a password. The system allows for an administrative workstation to automatically and transparently validate itself to a challenging network workstation, in most situations, without requiring input from the administrator.

  • Patent number: 6732822
Abstract: An apparatus for handling tubular goods which includes an elongate body having a coupling end adapted for mating engagement with a tubular good. The coupling end includes a structural member, a flexible cylindrical cage and a pressure member. Longitudinal strips joined at their opposed ends form the cage coaxial with and connected to the structural member of the body. The coaxial pressure member is disposed in an annulus between the structural member and the cage. The pressure member is adapted to cause radial displacement of the cage, thereby exerting a gripping force to maintain the mating engagement between the tubular good and the coupling end enabling a transfer of force between the body and the tubular good.

  • Patent number: 6679335
Abstract: A method for preparing casing for use in a wellbore such as for example, in preparation, for use to line a borehole through a formation or to act as a drill string and thereafter to remain in hole. In the method, a device supporting the use of the wellbore casing is crimped onto the outer surface of the casing. The device supporting casing use can be to facilitate run in through the borehole, to maintain positioning relative to the borehole, to accommodate wear against the wall of the borehole into which the casing is run or to enhance the results of cementing. The devices supporting the use of the casing are attached by crimping to the casing to create a connection having structurally significant axial and torque load transfer capacity.
